Here is the stats:

GDP in 1999 in US dollars looks "about right". However, this picture claims GDP in 2013 - at the peak. However. GDP has gone down - a lot - since then.

What the average US citizen, even well informed ones know about putin is what our press wants them to know. From what I understand the average person in Russia knows about the same about Ronald Regan. The interesting part is that talking to people in Russia about Putin is a lot like talking to Republicans about Regan....He is held in very high regard he is seen as having saved the economy and restored national pride. Indeed he is an authoritarian figure as was Regan.
