Well, when working on a story we gather actual facts by interviewing people and investigating using police records, medical records (those we can legally obtain), Freedom Of Information Act, other Government sources both on and off the record and so on. For "news" - both on background and for things happening in real time - we have access to news wires, police reports, tax records, all kinds of public information not available to non-journalists. Now, can that information be spun Right or Left? Of course it can, and does. But that's another kettle of fish.
Oh - and to answer Robbie's question: porn pays better than journalism.
And I do not do investigative journalism any longer. I prefer sitting in my underwear, smoking weed and watching other people have sex while my pornstar girlfriend blows me and I make a comfortable six figures. Call me crazy.
