I just ordered magic jack and then I looked at some reviews and I found out that the service displays ads on your computer and collects call data from your computer....
Who here uses it and how is it?

I use it when I'm going in asia I don't have anything bad to say about it except that when the internet connection at the hotel is slow sometime I have problem to place a call or I get disconnected. But at home on cable I never have problems.

I picked one up but haven't installed it yet. For $19.95 a year it seems like a great backup device to take on the road. I've heard mixed reviews about it but a lot of positive feedback.
MagicJack hands down. Much better quality on the calls. Skype generally lags for me. Not the MagicJack.
Skype has been really great for me lately. I have the permanent number and unlimited calls setup as a backup. Plus comcast voip, plus another voip for my 800 number and another local number plus cell. lol Then grandcentral aka google talk now to give out one number that rings all of them lol

Fuck, you doing gay phone sex?
Only people I know with that many numbers are us phone whores.

That's pretty much what I do too. I've got MagicJack, Skype and Packet8 numbers all forwarding thru Grand Central to my cell.
Nice little system. I like some of the new Google Voice upgrades.
Dont buy it from the infomercial, you can buy them at Best Buy or Radio Shack
I have one and it works great.
They are finalizing getting them in Walmart last I heard a few months back too. Best buy just got them. Think Radio Shack was the first to get them in stores though.
As said, Magicjack is convenient and cheap. The ads are in the phone console itself and EVERY phone company collects call data worldwide.
A nice benefit is that since most houses are wired for two phone lines, you can have an electrician put in a phone outlet to activate the second pair of wires for that second line, connect your magicjack to it and Voila!...you have a dedicated long distance line.
Has anyone found a solution to using a VOIP for the house alarm? I really want to drop AT&T's landline.
Comcast has a battery backup built into their voip modem. So you have phone unless the internet connection dies. Should be easy to tie it into your security system.
i use magicjack , the quality is somewhere between cell phone and landline, better than a cell but not as good as a landline
The interface is basically just like icq, showing ads , nothing very pushy. It comes on when you plug the phone in. You dont need to actually use any of the computer interface, if you plug in the magicjack , dial as if you were on a landline then unplugged it you wouldnt need to look at the computer at all

Another alternative is an ooma system. You can get it on amazon. You get to keep your home number and there is no yearly service charge. You pay a one time fee to get the system, it's a bit more but has a lot more features than magic jack. For me, magic jack doesn't offer the area code I have in KS, so if I used it, everyone locally would have to dial long distance to reach me. And ooma offers voice mail, call waiting and more.
I can't stand my Magic Jack. For one if my computer isn't on the phone doesn't work (not that big of a deal though since the computer is nearly always on), but their damn software is always screwing up and giving me errors so I haven't even been able to use it for the past couple of weeks. I tried upgrading their software, contacting them, taking it out of the usb port and plugging it back in, etc and had no luck. Another small but irritating thing is that it requires you to dial the area code even on local calls.

What if there is no phone line in there at all? Can I just have the main one activated?

nope, need that landline for alarm from what I have been told.
I use comcast's bundle for phone/internet and it runs my alarm system just fine.
Doubt I would want the alarm going through the computer though - one more point of failure - and one running on a MS os to boot. I can see all the comm failures now - and all the paid responses because the fuckin cops here bill you for every response - even when it takes them 2 fuckin hours to get to the house that is a full 4 minutes from the station.
