well i wont go into alot of detail about why ( because it reaks of my inability to code to proper standards ) but i made the script purposely ignore people in the exact same location as you ( so you dont detect yourself as being closest to yourself )
The person it detects as closest to you will always be > 1 mile away. the list of other people within 50 miles may include your own name because it may display people < 1 mile away. so there may be people closer to you than the person listed in the list below it. I know it sucks but hey i was coding like 15 other projects at the time, i did it for free and it is pretty damn cool nonetheless
another bug in the ointment is that i had to use 2 seperate geo databases , and that makes it a little buggyhatisblack at yahoo.comComment

Glad you find the geoip service shitty. People who trust their scripts to make a combined total of 3 million daily lookups seem to disagree.
That is why there is a script to stop 'abuse' so that people cannot unnecessarily flood the server, not because your little game overloaded the service.

GFY users never cease to amaze me with their arrogance and self-importance. I never thought that you, Smokey, was one of those people.
If you're going to use a service that has features in place to prevent abuse, don't slag it off simply because you are hitting the very filters that are in place to make sure that the service remains open for many, especialy when the AUP states that if you think you are going to be legitimately hitting the filters to get in contact with the reasons/use to whitelist the IP.

just to clarify i started out using an old maxmind database , then switched to borked's one and it worked amazing i just didnt read the terms and got the server blacklisted, so i had to go back to the shitty maxmind one that made the script a bit confusinghatisblack at yahoo.comComment
