    RIP passwords: new web standard designed to replace login method.

    WebAuthn will eliminate need for passwords by moving to methods of authentication such as biometrics, says web standards controller.

    A new web standard is expected to kill passwords, meaning users will no longer have to remember difficult logins for each and every website or service they use.

    The Web Authentication (WebAuthn) standard is designed to replace the password with biometrics and devices that users already own, such as a security key, a smartphone, a fingerprint scanner or webcam.
    Our bank has been using this method for years, they send an SMS with a code. But it's still great news.

                  So I bought a new iPhone in January, and couldn't transfer the Google Authenticator data to the new phone. I had to start over with each site.

                  Sites that have implemented Google Authenticator don't have a good means to change from one phone to the next. I have had to ask them to disable, so I can re-enable.

                  Sites that do the SMS code, usually don't have a means to use multiple phone numbers. e.g. when I am in the US I have a +1 SIM card in my phone. When in the UK and EU, I have a +44 SIM card.

                      when you move to a new phone you punch in the recovery code or what ever its called...

                              What happens if the device is stolen? I wouldn't want someone to be able to log in to my bank account just by taking my phone. And something like a webcam or fingerprint scanner is probably going to be gamed - and then what do you do? Change your face?

                                              I invented usb key 10 years ago, way before google authenticator and any other method. And as rowan mentioned, it have weakness - if you lose your usb key/phone/whatever, you could lock yourself out permanently. This is way i came with other method which is cloud based and fully safe. So you can travel anywhere, work anywhere, and still be safe from any compromise.

                                                  I rather have had the choice.

                                                  Also, biometrics is dangerous in the states. It's been ruled that police can't force you to give up a password that's stored in your memory but they can force you to to unlock your device or whatnot with biometrics. So easier, yes but actually a lot less secure (there's twins that have actually managed to log into the others account).

                                                                          It's not your whole fingerprint, it's part of one fingers print, not the whole thing.

                                                                          If that scares you, you can use a random fake fingerprint generator to create a print.
