It's a suspension that goes on his permanent record. Not enough punishment by any stretch but it's something. We all know cops tend to protect their own, and unless the guy did something extreme like actually cause someone's death thru his own cop-on-a-powertrip negligence they are just going to give him a slap on the wrist... which is what I expected in this case.
BUT... if he ever does anything this ignorant and stupid again, this is still on his record, and at that time I would expect stronger measures taken... probably in the order of giving him a desk job somewhere away from the public.

They rarely fire their own and these paid leaves are usually banked vacation time anyway, so it's a media holiday.
My buddy/old college roomate died in custody last year, they picked him up on a lawn passed out after a neighbor had called the police saying there was a drunk guy and he wasn't moving. They picked him up unconscious and instead of seeking medical attention they tossed him on the floor of a drunk tank and left him for 11 hours, when they finally checked on him he was foaming at the mouth and dead. Last week they were cleared of all wrong doing and negligence and they wont release the names of the officers on duties that night. Thankfully our other college roomy is a Lawyer and they are launching a civil case.MagnusComment
