If pot became legal it wuld be regualated. Which company is going to step up and make joints? people bash the smoking industry for cigarettes so you think they are going to start dealing in pot? Potsheads seem to think that if pot became legal they could suddenly grow it themselves. Do people grow tobacco? No. You'd have to by it in packs in teh store and show ID just like cigs. The THC levels would probably be regulated and be MUCH lower than regular pot is. thus driving potheads to go get illegal shit anyways.
They say legalizing drugs would lower crime. Really. Now while I will concede Prohibition made the mafia a powerful entity, but did getting rid of prohibiton end the mafia? No, they just went on to other things. Legalize pot and the drug dealers sell something else. Legalize that and they move on to something else. thats like comparing soda to cocaine. You cannot die or even get critically sick from smoking pot, yet you can die if you take 10 asprins. You are right about kids having it easier to get pot because its not regulated like alchohol. Prohibition also causes pot to become a gateway because people are exposed to a drug dealer instead of say walgreens or a 7 eleven. Industrial hemp has an amazingly wide array of uses, from concrete to clothing and biomass with environmental cleanup uses as well. It is truly underutilized here in the states because of the current ridiculous marijuana laws.

Define relatively harmless when its proven you lose critical brain matter when you smoke marijuana, also the "huge demand" you are talking about would subside fairly quickly with watered down, regulated and taxed marijuana. We have enough trouble and costs associated with controlling legal tobacco and alcohol abuse now, we dont need to add marijuana to that list.
