    CPU = Central Processing Unit

    A CPU is one single chip inside a computer. The Pentium is a CPU. The AMD Athlon is a CPU.

    A CPU is not an whole computer.

            p4 since i moved to those i never had a single problem even building my own, windows just likes p4 the best

                use AMD - they kick ass!

                My windows xp boots in about 30 seconds (it may also be fast due the gig of ddr2700 ram and 15KRPM scsi )

                  My xp boots in 12 seconds might be because of the Mother board and the cpu and the ram but who knows...

                  Recommend waiting for the p4 3000mhz cpu

                      I would go with:

                      CPU: INTEL P4-2.5 GHz,
                      MOTHER BOARD: ASUS (not a cheap one has to cost around $150)
                      MEMORY: 512 M.B RAM (Samsung, KingStone)

                        Same as above. Actually, I'm using such config right now. Upgraded several weeks ago from P3-550 I was lucky son of a bitch then. Video compression became 3 times faster Though, honestly, there are no other essential differences, except 3D games, which I do not play much recently anyway. If not a need in video compression, I would use the same P3 for another year.

                            The system recommendations above are pretty good. You may consider having your system custom-built with an upgrade path.

                            Many of the computers I worked on didnt have either enough slots to add memory - pci cards - usb slots - or the motherboard wouldnt take a faster processor.

                                  I'm gonna be upgrading in the next couple of weeks, this is what I'm getting an Athlon 2600 XP processor with an MSI KT4 Ultra motherboard with 1-gig of PC3200 ram, that's the way to go for a killer system. If you wanted an Asus motherboard, get the Asus A7V8X. Both of those motherboards handle 400ddr ram and also have an 8x agp slot. If you want longitivity out of your system, go that route.

                                    Slick is on the money I think.

                                    I prefer ASUS over MSI for AMD. I have an MSI board being rma'd right now...

                                    just remember that you can have a super fast cpu and lotsa ram, but with a slow ass hard drive or a slow video card, etc - your machine will still suck.

                                    If you go quality, stay with quality all the way thru. You will benefit 10x more in the end.
