Hit another milestone yesterday - 3.2million lookups yesterday... and by the looks of it a new one will be made tomorrow.

geoplugin.com - yup maxmind offers te free db as well, but well, 3 million lookups say gp offers a better service

nah, not at all into that. Some of the more db intensive queries I may make as a payable option if I need a server upgrade, but atm, the server is handling 3.5mill hits in its stride, so no reason to charge for something that is costing me nothing (besides hosting) but obviously helping a lot of people.

I remember talking to you... but I don't remember if you knew how to do these lookups in Flash Actionscript??? I need help with GEO lookup and Flash... I have a great flash guy, who is good in actionscript... But he doesn't know how to do geo lookups.

nah, adsense is useless - the .com page actually only gets about 3-500 visits per day. It's the webservice (the .net) that gets all the hits.

There is a way to monetise it if needed - most of the lookups use the javascript service (65% javascript, 25% php, 8% xml and 2% json). A client js call to my server does mean I could skim.

But I won't. No reason to - the service only allows an avg of 100k lookups per day (auto-script in place to blacklist IPs that are going to be avergaing more than that). Those that genuinely need more I give them and they actually do donate.

So, nah. Won't monetise cos it would never have grown to help so many people had I made it a paid for service. It's about 4-5 years too late to make $ off this, but I don't care. All's good.

It would be pretty easy to consume xml from custom php script that you could pass the ip to and return the geo info.

This looks good man... I have been thinking about doing the same thing for zipcode lookups. I developed a database for a swinger site that I run that returns results based on distance.

Pb with that is, it's restricted to that country, no? Worldwide zip code lookups are such a pain as they are a nightmare to get hold of due to copyright restrictions.

cheers bud - I tried that, but they all were like "yeah we have geo, it works, it sells", but blind to the fact that there are different levels of accuracy. Plus I have a much more expansive world database for the nearby locations lookup and my geospatial index/query is hot giving damn fast results.

But no, cos their db gives satisfactory results for their place they reckon their db is good enough
