The only way it would work is if the cost of putting videos online rose above the money made from advertising. You don't need 3 minutes of video to get someone to your site. All it takes is a picture. Back in the days when Newsgroups were the only way to get known, people were selling CDs of images or videos by the 1,000s. I was selling to them. Again it was more profitable to sell to the publisher than taking on two roles.
Then the user base was a fraction of what it is now. And slow as fuck, but still, people demanded porn and we sold it to them.
