If gold was as common as copper, we'd all be wearing copper rings ;)

Copper is valuable, and it's mainly stolen because of its relative abundance (cables, aircon systems, etc etc).

You could steal 10m3 of black steel, or 1m3 of copper - which is easier :D

No copper is just easier to get your hands on. There is always tons of copper on construction sites. So bums go in and steal copper wire, pipes that sort of thing.
