The US is a Republic. The founders were quite clear about this, because they feared "mob rule" and the "tyranny of the majority" that has historically characterized democracies. In fact, nowhere in the constitution of the US, nor in any state constitution, is the word "democracy" used.

You'll find this is the underlying meaning of that word most of the time it is used in discussion these days.
