I have it, but it basically sucks. I have asthma so my coverage considers that a preexisting condition and won't cover anything related to it. So I have a plan, but it basically just covers catastrophic stuff and I pay for doctor visits and prescriptions out of my own pocket.

I have it through work for $180 a month but I never use it. It's got insanely high deductibles.

Consider yourself lucky - our family coverage was $1660 a month (and would have gone up again in May) --- we just switched to a high-deductible plan that's around $850/month, but the first $3000 of expenses we pay out of pocket. The new plan is still a lot cheaper on an annual basis (we have a LOT of medical expenses, unfortunately) - but you're not paying as much as some people

I don't have any because I pretty much never get sick and I live a very safe lifestyle. I've been to the doctor once in the past 10 years because my ear was hurting.

With that said, this post will probably jinx me.

Those of you paying this much, do you actually use it?

I checked it out some plans and it seemed like a total rip-off. The worst thing about it is even if you have it they try and get out of paying!

It only takes one scan, one helicopter transfer, one crazy medicine to make insurance useful. It's easy to say it's a ripoff until you need it and then you are fucked.
I have it and even though I've paid huge premiums (cobra=shit) its still been worth it.

I have the same plan I had six or so years ago. It's only went up like $50 since I initially signed up.

I used to but, dropped it. Then I broke my foot and found out that if you don't have insurance, you get discounts from Dr's and hospitals if you pay cash. I guess that proves to me that they jack prices up for the insurance companies.

Geez, what kind of coverage do you have? I've done a lot of shopping for coverage for my family and I and get great insurance for a third of that. Unless you're real old or have some debilitating conditions, I don't see why its so high. Go shop around, www.ehealthinsurance.com

Without introducing politics into this thread, Obama has proposed the idea of creating lots of local health clinics. This would make healthcare easier for many, based upon convenience. In addition it would allow uninsured people an alternative to hospital emergency rooms (a huge problem), it would create some jobs in construction and health care, and finally (and this is not mentioned in the idea, but is pretty important) these clinics may become critical for all of us if some sort of pandemic flu-type virus occurs, or if there is any sort of bio-attack.

The idea that bailing out the banks, who mismanaged all of our money while lining their pockets without regulations, is somehow more important than healthcare funding, is just absurd to me.

I've done a lot of shopping for coverage for my family and I and get great insurance for a third of that. Unless you're real old or have some debilitating conditions, I don't see why its so high. I agree, I just switched because Humana went up to $550 for my family, shopped around and found another plan that is like $400 including dental, $2500 deducible, 90/10 coverage.

Health care is the primary reason people fall into debt and file for bankruptcy. The economics behind it would be that this would help lower-middle class households cut out their most expensive bill. It would allow them to be more productive and have the ability to pay off their mortgages and credit card bills. That helps banks who provide those lines of credit.

assuming thats true, that does not mean i need to be the one paying for it. it certainly doesn't mean that socializing medicine (which will require retarded tax levels and a retarded amount of money) makes any sort of sense in today's economy.

and talking about any sort of health care reform without talking about tort reform is totally pointless.

They also jack up the prices for Medicare and the like... even regular vendors do. Total bull shit if you ask me... I'm perfectly fine with businesses working for profit but I want to know why Medicare has to pay higher prices for the same products.

I know you have to use at as the talking point, but it's not the reason most doctors have high prices. Malpractice insurance is small percent of their total expenses (around 7%). It's about the same as it was 20 years ago.

A bigger issue for doctors is the costs they have to put out toward nurses. The shortage has increased their salaries dramatically over the years. Getting more nurses through school and into the marketplace would help lower health care costs a lot.

As for it coming from taxpayers, that's how our government works. We don't get things a la carte. I rarely drive but still pay for roads. I don't agree with the war in Iraq yet still pay for the costs associated with it.

I was talking to be a lawyer the other day and he said that malpractice lawsuits account for less than 0.05% of the money going around. His point being that everybody always says "if malpractice lawsuits did not pay such ridiculous amounts in judgments, healthcare would be cheaper for everyone" and it isn't exactly true. I don't know if I totally believe that though... maybe the amount of money being paid out is only just a fraction, but then why do doctors always say malpractice insurance is so ungodly expensive? Either the doctors are lying or the insurance companies are making out like bandits... probably a little bit of both.

That's a valid point. There is a massive nurse shortage right now. I'm also convinced there is a doctor shortage but I haven't seen any numbers on that...

The FDA has a solid reputation for being thorough and organized. The NTSB is world renowned for their expertise in accidents. The government has some bad programs and agencies, but also has some stellar ones.

As for the government vs private sector comparisions, I think we've passed that stage in society. The private sector was primarily responsible for the economic collapse we've seen and our private sector health care system is a laughingstock across the world. Government may not do a great job with it, but they can't do much worse than what we have now.

It is odd though to see so many people complaining about spending that were silent when we dumped trillions into the Iraq War fiasco.

The lady compared all the major companies and all their plans for us to choose from. Was really helpful and even told us to take a cheaper plan because the more expensive one didn't really offer anything more. She also works as our rep when we have issues with the company. Kind of a middle man as working directly through the insurance company is an absolute fucking disaster.

We are not talking about creating an "Agency" like the FTA or FDA or anything else... we are talking about a massive transformation of the health care system from what it is, to something it isn't and never has been and at a time when we can't afford the shit we are doing, much less taking on massive financial unknowns.
Social Security isn't going bankrupt. It can stay at its current pace for 40 years without any changes. With some minor reforms it can go for decades longer. The issues we'd run into with funding are based more on the fact people are living much longer and are expected to continue that trend for decades.

In any case, it's a fairly efficient system. Keeps track of everything you've paid in, pays out efficiently to people. Adjusts when spouses die and so on. The other examples weren't meant to mirror what a health care system would be, just pointing out our government can put together succesful programs.

The health care system isn't impossible to run. Most industrialized countries have one in place. Many of these countries much more corrupt than our own. I don't think it'll be peaches and cream, but it can't be any worse than the current system we have now.

If you have nothing wrong with you, you should be able to get a decent plan for under $200/month. When I quit my last job years ago and went into this full time, I had to buy my own and it was like $130/month. I was in my mid-20's too.
