Best zombies were in 2004's remake of Dawn of the Dead.
The 28 days and 28 weeks later zombies also kick some major ass though.I'm funner than AIDS, and easier to explain to your parents. -
I think it really breaks into two sub-genres: the slow zombie versus the fast zombie. 28 Days Later and its sequel worked because it was a case of "quasi-zombies"...the actual undead (when reanimated by a virus or something rather than necromancy) seem weird when they run like a track star because they should be decomposing and basically falling apart.

"The Beyond" is probably my favorite. Get the 1998 DVD version if you're going to watch it, as it has a bunch of bonus material and has been remastered, etc.
