Why is GoDaddy charging European VAT?

Do they have a business presence in Europe now or something? I've tried searching eu databases for "GoDaddy" but came up with nothing....

Or is this just an illegal scam to make more money?

If they sell to a EU citizen, they have to, unless the buyer has a valid VAT number. In fact, all US companies are obligated to. I guess many simply "forget" because there are no repercussions if they don't.

There is talk that the EU is going to be going after companies that owe them VAT in the near future.

If the business does not have a presence in Europe they have no right to charge VAT, as the non-European country of the business does not recuperate that tax

I think there are a lot of US based firms in for a shock

                        Yes, exactly.

The other thing to point out is that the US company doesn't necessarily have to have a business presence in the EU I don't think. US companies still owe the EU VAT if they sell to surfers in those countries.
