I have one of the first generation Fires and it is pretty cool. I wouldn't suggest it if you are looking for a great tablet (although, as you said the new versions fix a lot of the issues the old versions had) this might not be it, but if you want a good ebook reader they are nice and they are easy to use.
One thing to take into consideration: It works great for books bought from Amazon, but if you are going to view PDFs or books that you get from other sources, it can be a bit of a pain in the ass to get them to work.
