The United States minded it's own business until Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, dragging the US into World War Two. When we got dragged into WW2, the United States needed aircraft carriers to fight the Japanese in the South Pacific. Just to give you an example of how much we depended on aircraft carriers to fight the Japanese, during WWII we had 7 aircraft carriers when the Japanese first attacked, and eventually built another 160 aircraft carriers during the war itself.
Why do we need so many aircraft carriers? After being dragged into World War, the United States policy has been to ensure we have the ability to project military power anywhere in the world nearly instantly. The only way to do this is to have military bases around the world, and fill in the gaps with aircraft carriers.
Aircraft carriers are just amazing...
