CertifiedHosting lost all my sites, not even an apology

I hosted nearly 100 sites on Top Rated Unlimited Web Hosting - Reseller Web Hosting - Dedicated Hosting now all lost without so much of an apology from them, despite admitting that it was a recent 'data server outage' that caused it.

As I didn't have back ups there's no way of restoring the sites. Very foolish of me not to have backups but at the same time if your webhost loses all your data they should at least offer a refund.

Just a warning to anybody thinking of hosting with them.

This happened to me recently and after not being able to sleep for a full day the tech was able to restore everything minus a few pages on a site I didn't care about very much. After doing that I immediately moved my important stuff to a host with dual SSD drives and backup. Spend the extra $ to do so.

I would at minimum pull all your index pages off google cache or use web.archive.org to get them up asap. There might be a program to do it for you which would be worth looking into.
    I host with Vacares

Sorry, to hear about your issues. I learned the hard way myself a few times. Since then I always create redundant backups on 2 different external servers. You just can't trust cheap hosts.

Always have your disks in RAID. I had tons of HDD failures but always recovered without dataloss thanks to RAID

                      Following their recent debacle;
my hosting of wordpress sites was down for a few days, but eventually restored from their backups. Did they not offer you to restore?

not sure that it was a HD failure ....

                          'data server outage' : a database ? or ... ?

Obviously, you need backups outside from the datacenter ( another dc by ftp , local HD, etc ) .

You should keep some backups on your own disk.

My network is spread over many different hosts. Had a few sites there too but moved them away earlier this month.

Use Webair.com, you'll be fine. If you care about your sites, it's worth adding automatic backups to your hosting plan.

                                            Webair Hosting

I use and recommend Webair for hosting.

If you do this for a living, always have a business continuity plan

1 - know how long you can afford to be down
2 - know how to recover your site on the same host
3 - know how to recover your sites on a different host
4 - practice it once in a while
5 - ALWAYS keep a backup "off site" - be it at home or a different host.

If possible, script your DNS changes, so you can point it to a different IP within hours.

RAID won't save you from issues with the file system (corruption, accidentally deleted a file) and it also won't save you if something really drastic happens, like the destruction of both drives due to an electrical surge, earthquake, fire etc.

                                                      1. RAID is for availability, to allow the server to continue functioning even when a drive fails. (If you have hotswap bays, you can replace the drive without having to reboot)
                                                      2. Offsite backups with multiple snapshots are for when the shit REALLY hits the fan

my hosting of wordpress sites was down for a few days, but eventually restored from their backups. Did they not offer you to restore?
They offered to restore my sites from any backups that I had. On the plan I was on (shared hosting) they apparently didn't have automatic backups. I also have a Dedicated plan which is costing me $169 a month and which I'm obviously going to be moving to another host soon. I suffer a lot of downtime even on that dedicated server. Whenever I contact them to tell them the server is down they fix it then mail me back saying 'the sites seem to be resolving at our end', even though I attach a 'IsItDownForJustMe' screenshot.
