It depends on what you want to do with your life. If you want to own a business you don't really need to go to school to do it. If you want to be a doctor or a dentist or a vet or an engineer you will need to go to school in order to be successful.
Without going to school you will be illiterate. Won't be able to spell. read, write, or do simple math. Or even navigate walking thru a city or deal with money. Of course one needs to go to school.
If you are choosing a career where a degree is needed to hang on the wall then yes. If not then I'd say no as I've taught myself enough all across the board auto mechanics, html, php, server admin etc... without setting a foot in a school or any loans to repay. Some of my friends make less than me with their degrees and have 60-100k+ in loans to repay. I've bought quite a few expired $8 .coms since 2003 as well and have sold plenty from $650-13k+ in profit on each sale.
Success can be defined differently as well. If your choosing a job based on income expectations might not struggle in life but someone doing what they love with good family, friends and less income might be considered more all around successful than someone with major loot that hates getting up in the morning.
In order to be successful in the life of education is not enough. More often, success requires not only intellectual abilities, but also a good emotional intelligence, now it is often called social intelligence. First, the ability to adapt quickly, establish meaningful contacts, have adequate self-esteem, prioritize. There are many such personal qualities that contribute to successful socialization.

A lot about school has to do with society & culture. Those wanting society & culture to call apart are down for no schools & only neurotic home schooling. Thanks Putin
Schools need tweaking big time and need to be tailored to each person and put them in groups with learners like them to be most effective.
