I was watching that lunatic Rachel Maddow talk about it earlier for like 20 minutes straight. She tried to lay out the case that it must be a scam based on two key pieces of evidence;
exhibit a: The hotel is a one hour walk from the nice section of town.
exhibit b: A taxi driver couldn't figure out how to access the hotel.
Thus it must be a scam. Maybe an illegal one.
That's it. The entire segment relied on those two things. That woman is as nuts on MSNBC these days as Glen Beck was on Fox News several years ago. She is lunatic level like he was. Then she said Trump's Yemen travel ban caused spies to turn against the US and warn terrorists of the raid.Comment

It was a long winded article but basically the Trump group licensed their name but more importantly had direct control of every aspect of the building construction once they came on board.
Any money laundering going on at that point happens as the Trump family was over seeing the project and they would be profiting from it even if they were not directly involved.
His daughter was on the site every month, every thing that went on had to be ok'ed by the Trump family..
Either they knew there was corruption going on , or they didn't but either way they profited from it and that is illegal.
Basically the Trump family had full control over the project and they can not claim ignorance of wrong doing because they were in charge.

The feds can announce they did their job and "fined" someone, Trump still makes money on the deal most likely or comes out ahead on other shit like this he didn't get caught at.. everyone is happy everyone wins..

BUT...Rachel Maddow didn't ever investigate some of the things that Obama did as a politician in Chicago and his ties to political radical extremists.
ANd personally I never cared about that anyway.
It was a non-story. And had nothing to do with anything. Who President Obama hung around with and what he believes IS relevant...but not a "news story".
And neither is Trump dealing with Arab countries and using cash to get things done on a business project.
Now IF he takes cash from the U.S. govt. and uses it to pay off a hostile country...as Pres. Obama did...then THAT is a news story

THat's not at all what she said. She said the Hotel was far from what would be called a tourist or business area, and that getting to it was hard. She called it weird but didn't that that was a scam. It was a small piece of the entire story. And don't forget that this story came from Adam Davidson of the New Yorker, not from Rachel Maddow.Comment

It might be huge. Even if you put aside that Trump is now the prez', doing this deal might still be illegal.
The question is then: Are there other deals like this? And more importantly, can Prez T end up being influenced because of those deals to perhaps go easy on a bad-ass country? Could he be in a position to be blackmailed? I think these are the bigger questions.Comment

I'm guessing that over the course of time since the 1970's you can find PLENTY of times that Trump paid cash both overseas and in the U.S.
Just like every business does on specific occasions. Is it illegal? No.
Not reporting it on your taxes? Yes that is illegal...just like running a stop sign and just as common.
There are very FEW times that anybody receiving cash reports it. But that isn't what Trump did.
He paid OUT cash. And I'd bet you dollars to donuts that any time that Trump has paid anyone in cash he got a receipt and filed taxes on it to write it off.
Don't you do that when you pay cash for something?
Anyway...waitresses, waiters, cab drivers, doormen, etc. across the country definitely understand what it means to get cash instead of credit or a check.

To Trump's credit, maybe he didn't know that he might be breaking the law. However, The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (1977) says that even if you unknowingly participated, you can still be guilty.
The exact text says "The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, passed in 1977, forbade American companies from participating in a scheme to reward a foreign government official in exchange for material benefit or preferential treatment. The law even made it a crime for an American company to unknowingly benefit from a partner’s corruption if it could have discovered illicit activity but avoided doing so. This closed what was known as the “head in the sand” loophole."

Mark, what I'm reading is that the people "behind the project" are "close relatives to a guy named Mammadov who is part of the govt. in charge of projects.
And an unnamed (of course) U.S. official said this guy is even more corrupt than the other people of the country.
So stopping right there for one second...a "U.S. official" says this as a source? For what reason would this person NOT go on the record? Just ridiculous.
And then this "U.S. official" who we aren't allowed to know his identity because you know...he works for us...basically says that everybody in the country is "corrupt", but this guy Mammadov is the worst of the bunch.

And then much further down...if you can keep from falling asleep with the wall of breathless text...we are told that the Mammadov FAMILY (whatever that means in this context): "for years, it has been financially entangled with an Iranian family tied to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps"
