No it's not the same as saying the Beatles were pretty faces AT ALL. Unlike Elvis, the Beatles actually wrote their own music which has more than stood the test of time. Their few years of creativity pushed pop music forward (along with Brian Wilson) into places it hadn't been before. Charisma is just another way of saying pretty boy. Elvis was just a puppet real musicians and artists fed their songs through.

What's available in the media? You mean the 10,000 music blogs? Since when has MTV EVER been a representation of good music? It's been almost 25 years since the Dead Kennedy's shouted "MTV Get off the Air!" and you're STILL pointing to it and asking why it's crap?

Another fucking shitfest excepting Bowie.

The top 40 is ALWAYS at least 80-90% shit even on those rare occasions where you have a few big bands releasing good stuff at the same time. Even during a "movement" year people have a tendency to remember say, Nirvana's Nevermind and forget that Boyz 2 Men, Kriss Kross's "Jump", Right Said fred's "I'm too Sexy", Billy Ray Cyrus's "Achy Breaky Heart" all beat the shit out of it in the charts.

So once again.. it's a selection bias, remembering the good, forgetting the bad. There is always good music out there. You just can't rely on the tv to bring it to you... Just like you haven't been able to for decades so there is absolutely no point complaining because all it does is show your apathy to do anything other than be force fed (in which case you deserve the top 40) and ignorance of what is actually out there.

We're talking about pop music, the mass spread thing here - radio / tv, it's more clueless and worthless than ever. It's more idiocy than ever displayed.

all you have to do to make it in music anymore is to get popular in the getto. Then the suburban kids will think you're cool, the girls will think you are deep and edgy. Before you know it, rich white men want you to make videos. In interviews, let them know that you are "from the streets" and you "pop caps" and "Bust in bitches faces" Invent your own language or better yet, display total ignorance of the english language and the kids will love you.

People who can't appreciate today's music are boring as fuck. There's more amazing music being produced on a daily basis than I'll ever get a chance to listen to in just about every genre you can think of. Broaden your horizons.

Well with TLC there's a really great bass line you are more bitter than me I guess.. the thing is, the people who make pop music should really have as an attribute at least to be able to sing well and interpret the song, god damn I love Frank Sinatra or anyone who would be able to match him, those guys were one of a hell of a singers.

Well, as confirmed above, no single talent in the top 100 can change the fact that what's going on now is really just an effort to exploit more young people who never ever had a chance to hear real music or create their own style, so it's really wicked in a way.

Yes i agree with you man, but some pop stars have made it big not because of their music or vocals but because of connections in the biz or being at the right place at right time when creating their album......

I really admire Portishead, they're perfectionists and Beth Gibbons is just incredible,

Radiohead is something I admire a lot but haven't touched yet, as it really requires a certain mindset.

I have probably all the records from Björk, including some rare shit, but she started in the late 80's with that terrorist band on Iceland, how were they called - Kukl I guess, in fact the first record she ever recorded was in Iceland when she was 12.

I'm an avid fan of Tool and seen them live in 06, but they really also have their roots at the end of the 80's.

Apart from Gorillaz which I don't know too well, I guess it's that bloke from Blur singing over there.

I'm speaking about the pre 1995 era, bands that were really coming out with their debut album and killed it.

1986 alone gave us both Reign in Blood from Slayer and Master of Puppets from Metallica.
