    Wife want to try absinthe... uhm... ok

    So my wife springs on me last night she wants to try absinthe with me. I'm no prude I've done my fair share of drugs but I haven't done any since 2002 or so... and hallucinigens were never my thing. So I was like wtf... this is random...

    So anyways.. anyone ever done it? What was it like? Is the hangover bad?

                                      I honestly like the taste and experience of drinking it at a good cocktail bar... but I didnt trip or anything. The American stuff is way too safe. But back in my teens I had some in Austria and I tripped a bit... nothing too crazy.

                                      Get a bottle and make a night of it with your lady... or go to a really nice cocktail bar and have them mix you up a little absinthe cocktail...

                                          The absinthe that you can get nowadays is nothing like what the bohemians and artists in the early 1900's were drinking. If you want a nice experience with a quality absinthe order from http://www.bestabsinthe.com. The two kinds that are available on that site that I believe to be the best are the Nouvelle-Orleans or the Absinthe Edouard. The gentlemen who distills it is a very intelligent and interesting chemist from New Orleans. Years ago he acquired a 100 year old bottle of original absinthe and siphoned it out little by little studying it for a long time trying to recreate the original recipe. After many years and long hard work he now has a distillery in Pontarlier, France. (where it was originally distilled in the early 1900's) I have traveled all over and tried many different absinthes and have heard every fable you can imagine about the subject. Ted Breaux (the gentlemen whom I am speaking about) is definitely a well respected person within the community and is very knowlegable on the subject. I will leave you with a link from the Absinthe Museum in France that explains a bit more about the "effects". While back in the day it may have been stronger and some of these claims could have been true because of the thujone amount in the drink, it's fairly different nowadays. You won't hallucinate. Best you can hope for is getting really hammered but a more aware drunk instead of totally just falling over. Although, you drink enough of anything you are going to pass out.

                                          Be nice to your wife and order some from bestabsinthe to have an experience at least in taste and quality that is based on the original and celebrate this unusual and often misunderstood drink! Good luck! Have fun!

                                                  I tried real stuff this summer a few times, first of all it burns like a mother fucker AFTER it goes down and does so for about a minute... you don't get all fucking weird or see shit off it, but it is a mild mushroom like buzz... better then mushrooms though cuz its not as intense with all the other mind fucking effects... its quite fun though, gotta make sure it has teh real wormwood shit though... some of the other shit is just that, shit...

                                                  great stuff though, let her try it, its nothing crazy and no hang over... it ws the 20 beers after that did that for me

                                                          oh yeah forgot to mention too, even though i had the real shit, its not so potent, me and a buddy drank the whole bottle in shots, plus non of the burning sugar shit, just suck it back.. its only to make it smoother does nothing to the effect... I think the bottle said it was good for 4-6ppl @ 2 shots each or something...

                                                                  First time I had it was in Delaney's Taproom, New Haven CT
                                                                  ~ Although I dont remember going to sleep that night, I had plenty to drink before the shot of Absynth. The Absynth was more of a nightcap.

                                                                  Second Time (2 Days in a Row) Burbon St, New Orleanse, LA
                                                                  ~ Night 1, took 1 shot after some beers, just hit me like any other shot.
                                                                  ~ Night 2, took 3 shots in about 1 hour (started dead sober), didnt have any real serious effect on me, got blasted that night and woke up on the floor by my hotel room door.

                                                                  I dont know if its the Absynth, , or the binge drinking that takes place before, during and after the Absynth. Its just drinking liquid liquorish.

                                                                  I also feel that some may play the placebo effect card.

The only US legal brand I'd bother with is Lucid, who is made by the same people that are pretty much responsible for the absinthe revival.

                                                                                                                          Have you ever had Pernod? Pernod was originally absinthe. Now it's just a pastis (absinthe without the wormwood or thujone) like Ricard. It's an anisette liquor, so it's in the same real as Ouzo, only it tastes much better.

                                                                                                                          Avoid any absinthe from the czech republic. i don't care how much they claim to have made improvement, it's all pretty much the worst thing that I've ever put in my mouth.

                                                                                                                          If you are going to drink absinthe, it's best that you not go for the cheapest options, because you'll only end up getting the wrong impression about it. If you based your opinion of meat on Spam alone, you'd probably be a vegetarian.

Anything over 68% alcohol and it destroys the chemistry and makes it essentially moonshine. Most absinthe is offered at 33%, 55% or 68%, depending on where it's from and what the acceptable levels of thujone are. If it's real absinthe, it doesn't need to be capable of killing viruses.
