are some routers better than others

I have a dlink wireless that is also hardwired to two computers. If one of us uploads big files to the server the connection slows to a crawl. Are there routers I can get where that wont happen?

There is a big difference in the router OS

Get a Linksys (cisco software) or Cisco, and make sure flash it to newest version when you get home

You get what you pay for... amount of ram, speed of cpu, firmware quality, etc.

I had a problem with a crappy linksys... upgraded it to a D-Link gaming router... I've never had to reboot it since. Runs like a charm.

The router might be giving the uploader priority for some reason. Check inside the admin section to see what's enabled and what isn't. A lot of new routers have all sorts of features that can give priority or limit just about anything that passes through it.

I had a craftsman router, but the motor burned up in it while i was doing some routing on plexiglass. Got a new dewalt router and it hasnt had any problems.

I havent had to reboot my linksys wr54g in over 8 months, and for quite a while it had over 30 computers connected to it thru network switches, and then 5 wireless connections.

Wow, I paid like $200 for mine, and it's the non-wireless version. Gamerlounge or whatever. It can handle a crazy number or port connections, and you can assign priority to any type of traffic you want.

Are you on non symmetrical ADSL, eg 256/1500? If so then uploading will impact on the general responsiveness of the link. I was trying to upload several gigs of data but ended up giving in and expressing a couple of USB sticks to my host, because the link became so sluggish when doing anything else...

Haha, I just realised "non symmetrical ADSL" is a pretty silly term... if you know what ADSL stands for...

I have access to some smartbits network testing gear and I have thought for some time now that it would be a good idea to test and post the performance stats on a bunch of routers. There are two problems though. First, I haven't had tim eto do it yet and second the newest router I have is at least 5 years old.

I have a linksys that I paid 80 for almost two years ago....I can download and upload files while playing xboxlive.....I've had NO problems with it....

However, when I was using this same router when I lived in Puerto Rico, I would ALWAYS have to reset the router but it was the internet connection that was fucked up, not the router.....Now I'm back in the states on a road runner cable joint and it runs like a charm.

Get a cheap-o linksys and switch up to 3rd party firmware.

Been very happy with my WRT54GS since switching firmware.

More likely than not, your connection is getting capped, it's not the fault of the router...

yes of course, why would people pay 5k for a cisco when they can get a dlink for 50?
there's a difference, no doubt about it.

Well 5k is definately Enterprise level...but you can get some (SMB - Small Medium Business) routers/firewalls for around 200.00, here are some recommendations.

Yes they are fine as in get the job done (most of the time). However he asked if there was a difference and yes there is. That being said Im not sure the router is the source of his problems.
