Yep, the rock scene here in Vegas is thriving. But, I was told to fuck off.

Guess I'll just go fuck off now with all my guitars, music shop friends, and my buddies in bands around here

JDavis, so far nobody is buying the junk I'm selling.

You guys have my goals all wrong. I had no intention of just trying to get by doing music. Moreover, I have no fucking 'rock star' delusions. My only reason for wanting to start a band was to showcase my songs. I am into writing/producing/managing/publishing. I am not some pimple-faced geek looking to play 'rock-star'. That is something that AlienQ has been harping on.

I am looking for find temporary employment until I have built my adult web biz back up to the point where it can support me. I know how to do this shit. I started 10 years ago.

I would also be open to working on a model's site and shooting all the content. Again, I have done this before and know how to make money off a pay site.

It doesn't have to be LA. I am just looking for some place other than the street to land.

Give me a break, man. I thought you were being a smartass. I hope life is always kind to you and that you don't have to see this side of the tracks.

There is more to touring than being on a label. Above I was expressing the idea that a Major label or label does not really matter. What matters is touring and to undertake such a run at an older age would be fucking hell and even if a person is healthy... Touring can definatly put the deathnail in the caskett.

SO tell me do you people just look and wait to find angles to put me down all the time and tell me I am wrong?
Because you keep spouting misinformation. ZZ Top drew tens of thousands of fans to some of their shows as far back as 1974. A photo of the 1974 crowds was used on the record sleeve of "Fandango!" released in 1975. That's far from "but no one heard of them till the 80's with Eliminator when they signed to Warner". And in fact they signed with Warner in '79 and released "Deguello" on Warner first which included the classic track "Cheap Sunglasses", so again you are wrong. "Eliminator" was their second album on Warmer.

I don't care about all the other conclusions you draw, those are your opinions and you are entitled to them. But just about every supposed fact you mentioned about ZZ Top is completely wrong and that's all I am pointing out. Make your argument stronger with actual facts, and you won't get sidetracked explaining away your misstatements of fact like you have in this case.

Strange how he tells me that I am too old and then goes on to cite a counterexample to his claim.

BTW, I haven't ruled out Nashville. I write in a variety of genres and my stuff is as good as anything else on the radio right now. I realize that means nothing. My point is that I have the talent to at least compete. Here are a couple more polished demos of songs I have written.

                Lonely Fool
                Genre - R&B/Jazz/Soul

                http://www.doctorthor.com/fool.mp3

I'm just a lonely fool; I don't know what to do
Can't seem to shake your image from my mind
Heaven knows it's true; I'm still in love with you
And I dream about you all the time
But on that rainy day, you took your love away
Forever breaking this old heart of mine
I'm just a lonely fool, whose so in love with you
I'm just a fool in love with you

Thoughts of yesterday send rain clouds to my day
Storm winds blow those old memories through my mind
The rain falls everywhere; it's more than I can bear
But still I dream of clear skies and sunshine
I know my heart will mend, but it will fall again
If you come back and we should realign
I'm just a lonely fool, whose so in love with you
I'm just a fool in love with you

And now I can feel the thunder; I can taste the rain
You know it takes a fool to fall in love
And now I can feel the thunder; I can taste the rain
You know it takes a fool to fall in love

I know my heart will mend, but it will fall again
If you come back and we should realign
I'm just a lonely fool, whose so in love with you
I'm just a fool in love with you

And now I can feel the thunder; I can taste the rain
You know it takes a fool to fall in love
And now I can feel the thunder; I can taste the rain
You know it takes a fool to fall in love
And now I can feel the thunder; I can taste the rain
You know it takes a fool to fall in love
And now I can feel the thunder; I can taste the rain
You know it takes a fool to fall in
Takes a fool to fall in
Takes a fool to fall in love
A fool to fall in love

                Sweet Kentucky Rose
                Genre - Country

                http://www.doctorthor.com/rose.mp3

I remember the tears in her eyes
When she said she'd always wait there for me
I guess it came as quite a surprise
When I told her that I had to be free
I took my freedom and traveled the world
I've seen everything any one man can see
I broke all the shells but did not find that pearl
But in my heart I always knew where it would be
And I had only just to look right next to me

                My sweet Kentucky Rose
I'm comin' home; I'm comin' home
                My sweet Kentucky Rose
I'm comin' home; I'm comin' home
                Girl, I'm coming home

Sometimes we think that our place in this world
Is a place where we would rather not be
We tell ourselves as our lives start to change
That we need more than we have to be free
We take for granted the things we love most
And those ones we hold most dear in our hearts
We never notice until they are gone
And their memories start to tear us apart
If we had only known that truth from the start

                My sweet Kentucky Rose
I'm comin' home; I'm comin' home
                My sweet Kentucky Rose
I'm comin' home; I'm comin' home

I took my freedom and traveled the world
I've seen everything any one man can see
I broke all the shells but did not find that pearl
But deep inside I've always known where it would be
And it was always sitting right there next to me

                My sweet Kentucky Rose
I'm comin' home; I'm comin' home
                My sweet Kentucky Rose
I'm comin' home; I'm comin' home
                My sweet Kentucky Rose
I'm comin' home; I'm comin' home
                My sweet Kentucky Rose
I'm comin' home; I'm comin' home
                My sweet Kentucky Rose
                You know I'm comin'
Yes I'm comin' home to be right next to you
                My sweet Kentucky Rose
You know it won't be long
It won't be long till I'm back home with you
                My sweet Kentucky Rose

Hit up craigslist for las vegas, always guys searching for band members. Lots of casinos here that have live bands all the time, and plenty of clubs, thats why the rock scene is strong here. And several recording studios here as well.

As far as finding a roommate, good luck, dunno what to tell you about that.

I think you have some talent there. Sweet Kentucky Rose actually sounds like something that I would hear on the radio. (Yes, I do listen to country). Maybe Nashville would be a better move for you? In the words of Toby Keith, rock is pretty much dead unless it is classic rock and the ones that fit that genre are now making the move to country.

give the guy a break, fuck

Just cause he has no cash, shitty credit and no direction doesn't mean he doesn't need a break. Shit he compared himself to Obama, where are all the Obama supporters ready to give you money.

Thanks for listening. BTW, I am still working on the lyrics to that song. Modern contemporary country listings usually want more of a story. The lyrics, while good, are probably too philosophical for the market. It also lacks that killer hook. I was told by an A&R person I pitched to recently that this song was good enough for an album cut, but needed to be more hooky to be a single, and people aren't looking for album cuts They are looking for the next 'smash number one hit.

The one thing about being a writer of any kind is that there are always far more writers than there are readers/listeners. Myspace bands spam people and beg them to listen to their music and while there are a lot of great bands out there, for every good one there are a hundred lousy ones. Moreover, every band sounds exactly the same.

You are probably right about Nashville being a better place for me, given my age and the fact that, as you implied, it is really tough to get outside cuts in hard rock. (I can tell you though that my absolute best stuff hasn't been demoed yet - I am constantly working on improving my craft).

Most bands write their own stuff. That is basically the main reason I wanted to start my own band, to showcase the music, not necessarily to land a major label deal. Elton John only started performing his own songs because nobody would record his and Bernie Taupin's songs. If that isn't a reality check about how tough this business is, I don't know what is? Can you imagine someone passing on 'Your Song'? I know that I have the talent, but I also know that I am just one good songwriter among many good songwriters and that there is a lot more to it than just talent.

I was at a songwriter's conference a few years ago and during the pitch sessions (writers pitching their stuff to publishers and A&R people), one publisher commented after listening to a song submitted by one of the writers in the group, and I quote, "This is a hit song". She then proceeded to leave all the CDs from the pitch session on the floor for the janitor to dispose of. So even having a hit song apparently isn't enough. Believe me, I know how hard this business is, but if you quit or don't even try, you are GUARANTEED to fail.

You have to be an artist to understand, I guess. Most somgwriters are initially thrilled when someone wants to record their song, then they are appalled by what the artists/producer/label did to their song. As a writer, you always have a vision of how your song should sound and that is why most people get into performing, that and the reality that getting outside cuts is very difficult. I want to perform because I want to give my music my unique interpretation, not to make money. I don't care if I never make a dime performing, but it could open up doors to producing/publishing/managing. Who knows? And it's fun.

As the quote about Obama should tell you, just because the world tells you you can't do something, that doesn't mean you can't find a way. I realize that the hard rock demos are a little rough and need some live instruments and overdubs and some A+ production and that the vocals need some work as well, but I don't think you can deny that most of the songs there are (1) unique, (2) very catchy and radio friendly, and (3) well written lyrically with novel ideas.

Of course there isn't a person in the world who believes that a 46 YO dreamer can ever get anywhere performing his own stuff, but if you have creative ideas about using that to your advantage, you can get somewhere. And success doesn't have to mean number one on billboard. There are lots of Indy acts with growing fan bases who are quite content with the level of success they have achieved.

Despite the closed doors in the music industry, talent and a good unique sound and idea can win people over. All that matters is whether you can connect with the people is the audience and the people listing top your CD. If you have what it takes to draw in fans, all you need is the exposure, and that is not impossible to get. Here are couple ways I could use my age to my advantage:

                                                (1) pitch a reality TV show to MTV or VH1 about an old fuck trying to get a record deal. That is a novel enough idea to get some interest. Then work with a production company to produce it. You would get massive exposure and if your music rocks, you will get a fan base and at least an Indie deal with major distribution out of it.

Being older = unique and different, which, if you play your cards right, could lead to more free media attention.

William fucking Hung got a major deal and sold a million records. remember that guy in his late 30s who pitched for the Tampa bay Devil Rays as a rookie? No one thought that would ever be possible either. But the guy could throw a hundred mile an hour fast-ball.

                                                (2) Pitch to artists who have their own labels, distributed by majors, like Serj Tankien, who couldn't care less about what someone looks like or how old they are if their music is great. You don't need to be on a major label to be successful or happy.

                                                (3) Raise your own capital and do it all yourself. I know how to sell porn on the net and I know how to day trade. If I want it bad enough I can raise enough money to do a pretty good job of promoting my stuff.

                                                (4) Go theatrical ala KISS. Your face is behind a mask. Age problem solved. Go ahead. Tell me it can't be done. I won't believe you.

And if I fail or fall on my ass, at least I won't have to sit around in a nursing home one day wondering 'what if'. Life is too short and too precious not to do what you want to do. Feel free to call me a dreamer and put me down if you want to. I have been too miserable for too long doing stuff I really didn't want to do. I am living the rest of my life for me.

I am not just looking for a place for music reasons. If anyone knows of a girl who wants a single girl site and needs a web-master, I would consider that city as well.
