To busy to cook, tried a BBQ I never tried before - coleslaw question?

OK today was busy and neither of us wanted to make dinner tonight and leftover lasagna just did not sit right with my hunger. Checked our restaurant delivery book (independent service that delivers from like 30-40 places) and saw a BBQ place I had not yet tried. Ordered some pork ribs and they offered two sides along with some garlic bread. Well asked for baked beans and some coleslaw. Yup nothing out of ordinary yet.

Food arrived, smelled like BBQ all was as expected. Nowhere as good as homemade BBQ but decent for this town. Beans also were good, sweet and smokey. That leaves the coleslaw. Now I must admit I have always just had the shredded cabbage, some purple cabbage, carrots, (raisins icky), and some mayo based sauce. Well this stuff was just the cabbage, carrots, purple cabbage, seasoning, and some sort of vinegar base - no mayo.

It was a first, never tried it that way. Anyone know if this is common anywhere? What is your preference? I have always loved coleslaw (minus raisins). Found this vinegar based one very good, like up there with the good mayo based ones I have had if not better. I am now very curious and wish I would of gotten a pint of it instead of a small side (got pint of beans instead).

Coleslaw comments, what about the base choices, or info?

never heard of a vinegar based cole slaw. I used to love the KFC slaw but now Im just not a fan of slaw at all..

have never in my life seen coleslaw without mayo or miracle whip in it.

I take it none of y'all are from the South? A sweet vinegar based coleslaw dressing is fairly common here. You don't have to worry about the mayo going bad if it gets warm.

Finally someone points this out! I hate this fucking kind of coleslaw, whenever they bring the oily one I feel like throwing it on the floor. It's a waste of a good side dish, I don't know anyone who doesn't prefer the mayo-based one. LOL never thought someone here would bring this up!

Reality is mayo is pretty damn acidic on the PH scale even with the preservatives that the jared kind come with. It does not go bad as quickly as some think even if left warm. Bacteria really are not that tolerant of acidic stuff. I do see where your coming from though.

If it was left out for sometime though. I would figure the vinegar base would also soften the cabbage and any other veggies pretty quickly if left around, which would kill the crunch.

I actually like it after trying it. Now it did not satisfy my coleslaw desire but it was a good cabbage dish. I would of ended up annoyed though if I had ordered a pulled pork sandwich and it came with a side of this. As I find it almost required to put coleslaw on my pulled pork sandwich. Lack of a mayo base here would of been tragedy for sure. Especially if the pulled pork had a vinegar based BBQ sauce to boot.

Do most of you also have such a service where an independant company delivers for a whole slew of places for a flat fee per order?

i have a recipe that you boil vinegar ... sugar let it cook a little then you add oil and pepper n some other spice cant think off of the top of my head

it is pretty good and common at bbq places in the south so im sure it is something you had

pretty common here, my favorite version is shredded cabbage, shredded carrots, chopped celery, salt, a bit of olive oil, and lotsa vinegar, this is no way a coleslaw though, at least not in my book

I've had slaw all sorts of ways. I was born and raised in the South and it varies from place to place. If I'm having bbq, I'd rather have mayo-based coleslaw and if there's not already a bit of mustard in it, I add that and pepper.

My latest thing has been broccoli slaw (can by it pre-shredded and bagged where they have the bagged lettuce mixes). Sometimes I do it like cole slow and sometimes more like a salad or sometimes with just a flavored vinegar.

Have had the brocolli stuff a bit myself. Well until the other BBQ place closed. They also put sunflower seeds in it. Was pretty tasty. Figured I would give it a shot next summer.
