    Gaming consoles: help us decide

    The wife is hell-bent on buyin' a gaming console...but so far we've made three trips to the store and still remain undecided.

    Wii, Xbox, PS....

    She likes the girlie-type games, I like the action games (shooter, racing, war, etc.)

    I've heard the Xbox tends to overheat sometimes, and there's debate over which console has the better resolution.

    So...

    What's everyone recommend?

          I had to ship my 360 back to Microsoft twice (rings of death), now its broken again and since the warranty expired they are asking $110 to fix it for the THIRD time before it dies again after a couple of months

          my PS3 has been working fine all this time

              consoles are dead, MMORPG for the win.

              game cartridges with no updates is like buying membership to a porn site with no updates.

              I stopped buying consoles with the Playstation, havent bought one since.

              I like to log on to a game and see updates, new areas, new things to do etc... online gaming owns consoles so bad.

                              I got the Elite 360 because it had HDMI, a bigger hard drive, which is going to come
                              in handy with all the downloadable games and stuff and it is black which looked a lot better with
                              all my other black components.

                              I've had it a year with no problems at all however I'm a casual gamer that plays a few hours at a time and a few nights a week.
                              My sister plays ALL the time and she has burned up three over the years but the 360 has much improved it's reliability. I'm sure you will get your moneys worth out of it.

                              The 360 has a huge selection of games to choose from and there are a lot of really great games coming out right now that will keep you busy for a long time. There are also plenty of games that appeal to women and children so there's something for everyone and all ages. You can also download games and videos from the online market place and Netflix is coming soon as well. Online multiplayer is awesome.

                              The only reason to choose a PS3 over a 360 is the ability to play Blu-ray. Other than that the 360 is far superior taking all things into consideration for gaming.

                              The Wii would be nice as a second console and something to play for a change but if you're only going to get one the 360 is by far the best choice.

                                  How has that not resulted in a major class action lawsuit for M$? If it's a existing problem that is known, they shouldn't be able to get away with charging people to fix them, even if the warranty is up.

                                          Get the xbox 360 elite! I bought a wii a few months ago, banged through zelda, played some of the other "cool" games and but it in the closet and haven't touched it in months. Needless to say it loses its novailty appeal quickly.

                                          I've had my 360 for 2 years now and still play the hell out of it, they are always coming out with hot new games and playing on Xbox Live with friends never gets old.

                                              I would get the xbox 360.. I've had one for for almost 3 years now and only once did it fuck up. It has never overheated so this overheating issues is not something that happens to every xbox 360 owner. It also has many games to chose from with many more come..

                                                  I need to double check but the overheating/red lights of death only happened in first generation 360 because of a bad processor, all new 360 have had that issue resolved.

                                                      I have a 360 too and its been back once already with the ring of death and so have quite a few of my mates !
                                                      The 360 has the better games and if you spend a little more on the elite the overheating problems wont occur because its not made of shite like my 1st gen 360 is !

                                                      So IMHO I would go for an xbox360 elite and make your wife learn to love halo 3

                                                                  ive been playing MMORPGs for a long time now and as i said i havent bought a console since PS1. I used the word "cart" to date it.

                                                                  Im sure they have changed but that does not compare them to say a world of warcraft type of game that is an interactive and forever changing world.

                                                                  Rock band is about as "interactive'; as console gamers can comprehend.

                                                                  the Wii, xbox all that does not even begin to compare to what I am referring to in Player vs player realms and worlds where players dictate the justice of the land.

                                                                      I don't have the facts but I think the problem was with the launch 360s and they have since improved the design. MS extended the warranty from 1 to 3 years and did everything possible to rectify the flawed design. The time they took to fix and return the 360s was less than two weeks and they lost millions because of it.

                                                                      Generally, the 360 community was understanding and satisfied with MS actions.
                                                                      It was unfortunate and it seems that the newest generation of 360s are much more reliable and now you pretty much have to play it to death to kill it

                                                                                  I hear where you're coming from. I started playing text MUDS before the Internet, then eventually Ultima Online, EverQuest, Shadow Bane, Dark Age of Conan, etc, etc.

                                                                                  What's changed is I don't want to play games for hours and hours and hours every day. Sometimes I want to sit in front of my TV and bang out 30 minutes of fun on Metal Gear Solid 4 or have a bunch of friends over drinking and play some Guitar Hero World Tour.

                                                                                  MMORPGS have their place, just mostly not in an adult world. Who's going to call up their buddys on a friday night to come over and get a little WOW time in?

                                                                                          I have pretty much all of them .. and I love my PS3 best .. awesome games .. unbelievable graphics ..simple as shit to use .. web browsing ... the top model plays all the old games as well .. and of course BlueRay video playback .. all in all a great gaming/home entertainment setup .. just my thoughts ..

The games are finally starting to come out and all the media and online capabilities available through the PSN get better and better everyday. Plus you get a BluRay player... what is there not to like...

                                                                                                              Hey, I aint trying to judge you. I've spent ridiculous amounts of time in RPGs in the past. I've been a computer gamer for most of my life.

                                                                                                              See, like you, I never found console games measured up. They are/were often dumbed down for players and less controls. They weren't smooth and crisp like we were used to on PC. All of that has changed though.

                                                                                                              I recenly bought a PS3, the first console I've owned since ... Since I don't know when. That's how long it's been. Now, when I'm done work and want to kill a little time, I don't play PC games at all I always turn to the console.

                                                                                                              I work all day at my desk in front of the computer. Now yes I have a nice chair, good monitors, nice bright office etc etc, but none the less I'm here a lot. Compare that to sitting on my big comfy leather sofa, in front of my 52" Plasma tv doing 1080p resolution, just a shade smaller than my PC does, playing with a slick wireless controller. For me it's an easy choice.

It's such a different concept and so silly that it's just plain fun. Rockband and Guitar Hero World Tour are always a hit with everyone who tries them too. Great entertainment.

                                                                                                                          I have all 3 systems and I'd highly recommend the 360. The Wii was fun at first until the novelty wore off, now nobody plays it, not even the kids.

                                                                                                                          As far as the PS3 goes, it's a solid system, I never had any problems with it at all. It is a great system, however the online play kinda sucks compared to the 360 and of course, it doesn't have enough exclusives to make it worth buying over the 360. It is nice having the blu-ray player and in time, it's gonna have a couple of must have games like the new God Of War, but that's a ways off.

                                                                                                                          Now onto the 360, it's the best of the 3, I have 4 of them in my house Online play is great, there's a good selection of exclusive games such as Fable 2. Like others say, they aren't made the greatest. I had to ship out units 3 times now and there was the 4th that shit out, but it was out of it's warranty period, so I just went out and bought another one.

                                                                                                                              I have a 360 and it just got the red ring of death. I've had it two years and it probably has 200hrs on it max. I hardly ever use it (won it from Python.com). I'm considering a PS3 as a replacement, it's got the blu-ray, better graphics, etc.

                                                                                                                                      My brother has the whole set up, i can dig it, for a little while but i wouldnt buy it.

                                                                                                                                      I played the Wii bowling during hurricane evacuation, I enjoyed it to. Playing with others can be fun, but when I sit down and want to play a game, I am a MMORPG player, and dont really play anything else anymore.

                                                                                                                                      I only have time for one game, i had UO and WOW subscriptions, but cancelled UO and down to just WOW.

That game was still my favorite because one player could easily take on a whole group of people by using skill. I used to PK naked except for a red hat. One of the original and last Dreadlords.                                                                                                                                                               I have a ps3 and wii. I have played the wii twice. It's about as fun as slapping my dick against the sides of my freezer. The ps3 is pretty fun.

                                                                                                                                                                  My man's had his heart set on a PS3 for Christmas, so we rented one over the weekend to give it a try. He got the one game he wanted to play on it (GT5:Prologue) and both he and his friend were bored of the system in 2 hours. They went back to his PC to play Far Cry 2 and R-Factor.

                                                                                                                                                                  To give the PS3 another chance, we tried the media capabilities. It didn't handle codecs very well and made divx/xvid look pretty choppy.

                                                                                                                                                                  So... blah. I can't justify spending $500 on a console that I won't even use. Bring on the Wii!

The other day, someone who's in not bad shape I guess but nowhere near as good shape as I'm in asked me if I'd ever heard of "Wii fit?" to which I responded "No. Have you heard of actual fit?". Only had one problem with the rings of death, but I got the extended warranty so they sent me a brand new one and have not had a problem yet....*knock-on-wood*

                                                                                                                                                                          My buddy got a Wii and it is fun to play when you have a group of friends hanging out. I say it all goes with what you are looking to play. If you want a gaming console you can have friends come over and have fun playing then I say go with the Wii. If you want straight up gaming then go with Xbox360. Oh and be sure to get the Xbox Live subscription, major fun!!

                                                                                                                                                                              After considering everything, we went with the wii console. Why? Well, I figured the wife would get far more use out of it than myself since I'm only a sporatic game player (I tend to bore rather easily - attention span of a gnat, heh).

                                                                                                                                                                              She picked up the wii console along with Gh4 (both guitar and synth drum kit, mic, yadda, yadda)...and a handful of games. She got the last Gh4 that Walmart had in stock, and the last wii console in stock at BestBuy.

                                                                                                                                                                              So I wound up stepping in as hook-up technician (wired it into the 62" Sony downstairs and fed the audio into the Kenwood/Bose/Audiosphere surround sound system). Now she thinks she's Joan Jett and the daughter is Pat Benatar.

                                                                                                                                                                              Anyways, greatly appreciate the useful feedback.
