i don't know anything about this really, but why does it matter what the girls think of your equipment? why not just tell them to pose like you want or they're not getting paid?

also, doesn't the lens make the camera? if you're shooting w/ a $1,000 lens and good lighting (reflectors, umbrellas etc), the photos from a D40 should be about the same as those from a D5.

You never find good models. You make them into good models.

We advertise in papers and on the Net to get models, plus girls who have worked bring friends and contacts. So we get loads of new faces. None are good models, some are pretty and some even attractive. This IMO is what I think makes a good pornographer. And it's all done on the casting and first shoot.

The ability to appear like a professional in front of a model. But not so professional that you are distant.

The ability to explain yourself and your work to a girl/girls on a casting. They NEED to know what you do and what you expect of them.

The ability to sum up a girl by her reactions and assess what she will do and what she can do. And then fit her into those slots.

When shooting your need to know the different angles, poses and ways to shoot a niche. We all see pictures of girls posted on GFY where the girl is very pretty, but something is lacking. She is not doing it right. That's the shooters fault because she is new, does not know and is not taught. The shooter should be the one teaching her. But he can't because he does not know. He thinks all it takes is $1,500 worth of kit and a naked girl to be a pornographer.

One of the biggest problems today is the belief that anyone with any budget can pick up a camera and shoot porn. It has led to a deluge of sites and DVDs that are full of the same low level repetitive porn. The person who does not think anyone can shoot porn is the often the guy paying for it.

I wonder why this got bumped. Look at when I wrote it.

What a model thinks of you is the difference between shooting porn and shooting a naked person/people. You need to have their respect, trust, attention and most important is their willingness to do it the way you need it done.

Telling a model to do it like you want it done or she/he will not get paid is the last resort and if you need to go there you fucked up earlier. How do you do that half way through a boy girl girl shoot knowing you will have to pay the others, the location, make up and all the other expenses? Best to establish a good rapport in the first place.

Yes the lens is very important, spot on with that one.

          A few thoughts.

Look at when this thread was started and think of all the content shooters who have gone since then. So I must be doing something right.

Also what sells porn is not what's between a girls legs. It's what's between a girls ears that makes it porn.

In other words it's what she's thinking and how you capture it that makes it porn. We would all fuck her, the difference is making the viewer think or even know she would fuck him that makes it porn.

yea, i can see how it would be much harder to find a girl who could do ir right than it would be to just find a willing girl.

as far as finding models, i'm thinking it might be easier to just move to moldova for 3 months and set up a studio in an apartment. they're probably more intuitive and less inhibited anyways.

btw nice models on your site

Good idea, now why don't I go there?

Might be something to do with the law, police and Mafia.

Even coming here 10 years ago, thinking girls would be lining up to earn a months wages for a days work would make it easy, was a mistake. Nothing makes a girl more willing than having to get the money. They did not need the money. Made it harder actually.

One of the problems recently has been the amount of work available to girls has put them in charge. You can tell them to do it your way or go home. Problem could be that she has a job in the afternoon and booked up for the next two weeks. She does not give a fuck if she gets this pay and even less if you make a profit.

That's one of the reasons there are so many crap performances in front of the camera today.

              Thanks for the compliment.

I think the more content the better...the content game is over saturated with too much of everything. Its either shittty content or too dolled up.

I actually like the fact that so many people are getting into the content game...in my short time I have already seen my fair share of "come and go" content producers from a variety of niches and skill levels....honestly it just makes our brand and stuff look better.

Key is to try to do everything equally well. You can have the best looking content and the hottest looking photos but if your store or sales plan is shit then you wont make to much $$$ and vice versa you can have the best store, best delivery and sales plan but if your content sucks then you'll net the same results.

Just remember, people think its easy.....they see the pretty ladies...diamonds on ears, rings on fingers, watches on arms ....but it aint ezy ya dig, your gonna have to work some to get to this status baby....see ya at the top!

                  Good luck to all

It's amazing how long an idiot who does not know what he's talking about can last in this business.

Thankfully no one listens to me and we are now getting better ratios, better retention and all earning more money than ever.

MatrixRashaan is right, content is only part of the recipe to make a living. Traffic, design, the way a site works and a lot of other things count. Good content is an edge because few can create it. And in this business once you get into the area of doing something 10,000 others can you can bet they will.

Like so many flamers there is nothing behind your statement. Give us the list of what you think a guy needs to buy to be successful shooting porn. Yes he can start with a $500 stills camera and a $1,000 video camera and maybe buy them second hand. But will it lead to riches? And do it with prices at the time I wrote the post and not todays prices.

If you think so tell us how it works. Barefootsies can also do it.

Peace is right, the future will belong to those who are more creative. The pity is in todays market few will be. But that will be good for the few who are.

xenigo $5,000 does not buy high end equipment. But what you call high end I might not.

Yes you can cut the budgets and be like 1,000s of others cutting the budgets. But when the girl or couple walk onto a set and see you with your bottom end kit they will start to think you're not a pro. A pornographers job has little to do with photography or the equipment. It's the ability to think up a scene, convey it to the models and make them perform that scene. Having good equipment is one step towards impressing them you have a clue.

Even if it's all switched off and you're using amateur kit they still know you're a professional. I'm shooting more and more content with me mobile phone for the mobile phone market. But the models know I'm a pro because they see the pro kit.

                          Excellent point as always.

These threads with Markham always make me laugh...

Listen toots, you shoot good material. There are others out there on the high end of the content production equation. But this is not a photography board.

In this economy with big programs cutting their new content budgets, or amount they are going to spend. Unable to convert your HIGH END material into sales, and tubes giving away 30 min videos for free. People want what converts, and shot decent.

Knowing your niches is what makes or breaks you. Not pretty lighting, and cameras, and so forth. You can make a decent production on the back end in post production as long as you have lighted well enough.

Not a single time in 5+ years have I heard, or read, and e-mail with a member or buyer complimenting my camera equipment used, or how the lighting was so magical that they blew their nut before the girl even came on screen..

Knowing WHAT you are shooting, and HOW to shoot for that market or niche, and making your stuff stand out from the competition is what keeps SOME of us profitable.

                          Period.

Shooting porn is much more about fantasy than F-Stop

Quality content does not always mean high end productions.

I make a very good living off of my website. However, you do bring up some good points. It's alot harder than most people realize. When I first started out in the biz, I took the time to learn exactly what to do and how to do it before I started shooting content. And yes, you do need money to get started - as with any other business. And it definately helps to choose a niche that you are familiar with as well as a niche that you are personally into.

Having nice equipment definately helps too. Even though I shoot amateur content, I still prefer to shoot with high quality equipment because surfers want to see nice looking pictures and videos. Just because your content may be amateur doesn't mean that you should shoot with shitty equipment. After all, if your working with very exclusive and amateur girls as I do, shooting with high quality equipment is not going to make the girls any less amateur. It is just going to make you have high quality amateur content as opposed to shitty amateur content like so many of the other amateur sites out there today.

Marketing and promotion is a BIG part of it too. You have to get your stuff out there to the surfers. So many people act as though just because they have a website, the signups are going to just start flowing in. I don't care if you have the BEST content out there, if people don't know about it, your not going to get signups. Of course, having an affiliate program definately helps too. Good SEO skills are very important too as well as having html knowledge, being familiar with how servers work, networking with other webmasters, having good people skills - both online and offline.....Hell, I could go on and on but for the people that are serious about making money in this undustry and as long as they have the drive, determination and experience to make it happen (along with high quality, exclusive and content that converts) then they should be fine - as long as they WORK HARD at it.

No...Alexa is NOT the guide mark for how to shoot porn....However, it proves that even with cheap cameras and the "amateur" style that you despise, I'm still HIGHLY popular..

I would like to state this is to help those who are determined to become porn producers and deter those who think it's easy.

Firstly, porn is a saturated market. The last figures I heard for the US was 16,000 videos released in a year, that's over 44 a day. An average magazine every month receives 10 times the amount of content they need.

The Internet is probably the least saturated section but look around at some of the prices people are working for. People are offering content to us at prices we cannot produce it for, we don't buy it because we know we can't sell it. Because the bottom of the market is flooded.

So if you're still determined to follow read on.

First decide what niche to shoot, you need to know something about the niche as those buying it, the surfer, will definitely have a clue, there is no niche called "Crap Pornography". Research, research and research again. Then learn about what you researched.

Buy decent equipment, otherwise you will look like an amateur to the models and your work will suffer. The better your cameras and lights the better your work will turn out. Crisper, cleaner, better lit, better color balanced, in focus images or video will sell. Content shot on cheap equipment is everywhere and being practically given away most of the time.

If you don't have a budget of $5,000 minimum for equipment forget about it. Even that budget is pushing it.

Now learn how to use the equipment. The new digital photography age makes life so easy. There is absolutely no excuse for out of focus, poorly lit and bad color pictures. Calling it amateur is not an excuse.

So now you know your niche and equipment. Next is your market. Take some time to research it look at what people at the top are publishing. You will never enter the market at this level, this is where you're aiming for. Be very careful what you post or email, because people will start to ask to see samples.

Next stop is models and this is the tough part. Where are they going to come from, what kind of models can you find, what will they do, what will they want to earn? All these factors need to be resolved where you are, not asking me about how I do it. Models in Czech will do more, do it better and be more plentiful than models in Afghanistan or even New York, they also tend to be better looking. Your models situation will need to be resolved by you locally.

Learning how to make a model who is only there for the money and with no intentions of fucking anyone, look like she would fuck for a pizza is the real gift of a pornographer. Each model is different, needs a different approach, different direction and different motivating. If I have to explain how to do this I seriously suggest you go practise for a year until you get this right.

This is the tough part. Learning how to get the maximum out of a model when they intend doing the minimum is the hardest part of my job. Any pornographer will tell you they are part photographer, part pornographer, part psychologist and part wet nurse, with a little bit of favourite uncle or lover thrown in. And if you think this is an easy way to get laid, forget about it.

Remember the bottom of the ladder is crowded and saturated. If you think it's going to be easy with 100 other people producing content no better or no different from what you can do then think again. If you think you can compete and make the money we make, then look at www.paulmarkham.com. This is what you need to equal to earn what we earn.

And getting laid is never on the menu. after a hard day with me girls are happy with the work that they put out but very tired and sore. I would look like an ass and would loose respect if i tried to bang her. all the girls talk. Furthermore if you do bang them before the scene, the scene will suck. They feel that they banged the boss so now they dont have to work.

try to hire models who actually love what they do, there are actually many of them out there.
i am very lucky to mostly work with these type models, they mention to me that they are excited and happy to be modeling and working with me, and me, i am happy to be shooting them ;)

                                                Period.
Could not of said it better myself. If you think my argument is about photography you really need to read it again. Porn skills will always out shine photography skills in the porn game. Never said anything else.

And yes a good pornographer with amateur equipment can still impress a model and show her who's the boss. I said having good equipment helps to impress. It does not make a bad pornographer a good one. And pornography has little to do with photography. About as much as typing skills has to do with writing a book.

Again well said. I said it helps.

It helps when the girl walks into the room and sees you can afford to have the right equipment. Does not help if you don't know how to handle her and use the equipment.

There are many ways to skin a cat and there are many ways to get a model to perform in a way that she should work. Having good equipment is PART of the approach. It helps to establish you from the beginning of the casting. Even doing a casting is professional. It establishes you as the boss.

So true!! I deal with this everyday. My job is to make that girl look better and act better than all other directors and producers.

Not always true for me or Eva. Shooting a girl solo who wants to get into your pants because she likes what's there is easier than shooting a girl who has no interest in you. Some of my best solo girl scenes have been shot with girls I was dating. Maybe I'm just a good lay.

This is not an easy way to get laid today, the disco is far easier.

Shooting a girl who does not want to fuck you and scared she has to or shooting a girl who fucked you and thinks she has control is just bad porn and bad porn skills. But that's like shooting a girl who does not want to do it or a girl who thinks because she is the model she's in control.

try to hire models who actually love what they do, there are actually many of them out there.
i am very lucky to mostly work with these type models, they mention to me that they are excited and happy to be modeling and working with me, and me, i am happy to be shooting them ;)
Which is why I advise shooters to do a casting and find out who the girls really is. Take some test shots and see if you want her back and for how long. Never 100% but it helps.

And yes there are girls who enjoy their work. The problem is shooters who don't and shooters who don't teach the girls to enjoy it.

I did a casting Wednesday and had a mix of new and experienced girls. I was telling the girls that I want real action and would not accept faking, unless it was very very good. They were telling me that no one else was making them do it this way. I told them they can't fake it well enough to fool the buyers, even though it might fool their boyfriends. And I would not be shooting 5 sets and videos of them in a day.

Today too many shooters and sponsors sacrifice reality for quantity. Then we complain about fewer people wanting to buy. Think about it.
