dual monitor question

Is it possible to have 2 seperate desktops?

I don't want my first computer extended. I want it to have its own task bar, and own windows ect. Bassicly be a unique instance of windows not connected to the other, but on the same computer. Is this possible? Or do I just need to have a whole 2nd computer to do this?

If you run dual monitors, you need ultramon to have two seperate taskbars.

For two seperate instance of windows, i'd guess you need two seperate computers.

You can use VMWare for the separate OS instance(s). Or you can have two computers and use Synergy to use one keyboard and mouse for both computers.

Ultramon won't do anything for a separate Windows instance. It just helps windowing within one OS. You need a virtual machine if you want to run a completely separate OS on one box.

if you want to run a entirely different instance of your OS, you can use VMware of you can use Microsofts own Virtual PC - its free

I would however reccomend just using your current single OS and just use it as a split desktop layout. Much Better preformance that way

QFTT use ultramon or go with 2 computers! Personally I like ultramon and then a 17" laptop to make the third screen...

The reason I wanted a seperate instance is because I kept losing focus on the current ap I was working on. I would click the app on the other side and it would focus on it instaid of focus on both. Pretty annoying

Guess ill just buy a another computer for it

I'm not exactly sure what you are talking about? Your title says dual monitor but the body of your post sounds like something completely different.

Look into VMWare, VNC, and also Synergy. See if those are what you are looking for. Without knowing what you are asking for I can't be more specific.

The problem is not your computer, but your grafx card. Matrox have the best cards for true dual screen(its the only card that works 100% for videoediting on dual screen). ATI also works well, since you can just select 1 out of 5 seperate desktops. That way you are 100% sure it works

I am a Mac user, and have virtual desktops built in to the OS, as do Linux users.

That is what you want.

I don't know of a 'good' PC one but there are loads:
