I love my surface pro but it's not quite a laptop. They do make a surface book or something like that which is an actual laptop..

The reason to have 17" is because I do designs, less than that is hard to work on, even if it's a retina 15" - have to zoom in and out all the time + the objects are really small - I would need to wear glasses to make it ( +1 LOL ).
Main bug i hate about all other machines is that they start to drool like a helicopter after 3 months of usage.
Will check ultrabooks, if there are 17".
So far, found this one: 15.6" :]

Are you sure you need such a machine? Unless you're doing some video editing, I'd suggest going for a Macbook Air instead. I bought mine a couple of years ago and LOVE IT. It boots in 5 seconds, does everything I want (email, browsing, videos, ftp, etc). It also doubles as a computer for my music studio (I run Logic Pro X). It's also super light, and I get about 10 hours to a charge. Love Love Love this machine.Comment

I LOVE macbook air. But I can NOT really work design shit on it. Since there is no 17" macbook pro anymore, I'm considering a retina 15" macbook pro.

why not just get a 15" laptop and hook it into a 23" or larger monitor. That's what I do. I use to swear by 17" laptops cause they were big enough to use and not have to squint but you could still take them with you. Now that I've had a ipad and now a samsung 10.5" tablet I don't need my laptop to go on overnight trips.
I have a sleek and quiet Dell 15" laptop that I hook up to a 23" lcd via hdmi. I also use a wired usb keyboard and wireless mouse. It's a i7 processor so it's powerful enough to replace a desktop but the 15" is still portableComment

I have no recommendations on a 21" monitor for you, sorry, but there are definitely lots to choose from.
There's a cool feature in OS/X that I only really started using this year. In OSX, you can "extend" your desktop without the need for multiple monitors. I think its called a "Virtual Extended Desktop". You can create additional desktops, and then "swipe" between them using 3 fingers on the trackpad.
When I want to work on my Macbook air, I setup a desktop with an HTML editor in full screen, then create a second desktop with a browser in full screen, then a 3rd with FTP, and a 4th with Photoshop for example.
Then to switch between screens, all I have to do is the 3-finger swipe left or right on the trackpad.
It's surprising natural, and moving between screens is instant. It's much better than trying to pack the 4 windows all on to the same screen, or click between them.
Of course this also works if you have 2 monitors and an extended desktop.Comment

This is what I'm currently doing. But i travel a lot. Hence, 17" macbook pro ( sadly not an option anymore ) or 15" retina one ( fairly expensive solution and yet i'm not 100% sure if i want to work doing a lot of zooming due to physical object size ).
Since most of the work, when i travel, is done in a hotel / apartment, not on the go, i tend to think a 21.15 slick monitor and a powered up macbook air should do.Русня, идите нахуй!Comment

The biggest iPad is 12.9" only, however it's ultra thin, light weight, and runs about 10 hours on a charge, and it connects to your Macbook wirelessly. Maybe this would be an ideal travel monitor for you?Comment
