I'm about to install the Android OS on my new HTC Diamond. I had it on my last phone and was impressed, even though it was still an early build.

I think the gphone is a bit late in the game and even though for sure will sell. It won't be a serious competitor of the Iphone.

The Iphone already has 1000's of applications and there is nothing outstanding on the features that the iphone can't do.

Then you must think that google was a little late to the search game too don't you?

"late" is a term that simply doesn't fit. Apple has never been friendly to programmers. Google is... Android will start gaining power and blow by the iphone within about a year.

Show one thing google has done that has hit besides search? If they run it like youtube and just give you the phone and the airtime then yes it will go big.

Crackberries have a fanatical following and so does apple and for two opposites reasons so where does the gphone fit?

Google is in on practically everything!

Have you heard of a thing called gmail? came out and bitch slapped the entire email market. It's even to a point where I don't even bother keeping POP accounts in Outlook.

There simply isn't a more powerful company than Google. They aren't going half assed into the phone market. You can expect them to gain significant ground in the phone market over the next year or so. Android is actually coming along at a very nice rate.

That's because you probably don't realize that there is no "GPhone". The G1 from T-Mobile will be the first of MANY MANY MANY phones running Android OS, which was developed by Google and an assortment of cell phone manufacturers and service providers.

It might take a little bit to catch on, but I am willing to bet that in the end...there will be more people using/running Android than are iPhone users.

Google has put up $10,000,000 to jump start application development. There are already a large number of apps, so no worries there either.

It's not just a competing phone from another company, it's a whole new platform that will be installed on many phones from many manufacturers.

Combine an eager developer community with a cheap, open development platform, and what will eventually be tons of hardware choices for the consumer... I think it'll be a huge success. I know I would buy one over an iphone or blackberry.

as soon as HTC rolls out that HD touch with android along with support for large SD capacities it is all over... Garmin needs to port REAL GPS over to android (google maps is a joke for GPS)

If the HTC mogul (which has been out what like 2yrs now?) had a real OS instead of the POS windows mobile there simply never would have been an iphone.

Simple things like battery swaps that ANYBODY can do /discussion

If they put together something like that HTC touch diamond with something like apples normal ipod wheel mechanism for rolling through songs it would simply be over, there would be only 1 phone on the market well actually 2.... the touch only version and the one with a slide out keyboard.

I've said this MANY times in various places. THIS IS THE FIRST android phone. Give google a full year and the iphone will be just like a mac - looks pretty but in the end simply doesn't fill anything but a niche for apple fanboys who are willing to pay far more for a device supported by less.

Within 5 years the iphone VS android will be the PC VS Mac - everybody says mac is so secure but in the end it is simply because nobody wants to bother exploiting macs since they don't have enough MARKET to bother.

I have forced myself to spend a minimum of 45 days with various OS's as my ONLY operating system on my main computer. I've used Ubuntu, mac, vista, XP and Win 2008 (vista server). By far my favorite OS is win 2008 BUT in the end lack of media center connections with my xbox ended up making me go to choice #2 Vista! If I did more with videos Mac is real slick but didn't fit me for more than just a pretty toy.

I thought I'd add - I have no plans of adopting android for probably another 6mnths. I have to ride things out with the Moto Q and Mogul with sprint a bit longer until prices are subsidized decently for HTC's next round of phones. I haven't even seen the mogul update available for sprint yet! For some reason of all the phones I've been checking out in person the HTC phones are the only ones that really interest me.

It might take a little bit to catch on, but I am willing to bet that in the end...there will be more people using/running Android than are iPhone users.

Google has put up $10,000,000 to jump start application development. There are already a large number of apps, so no worries there either.
There are also MANY, MANY, MANY, MP3 players on the market. Still, the Ipod outsells them all.

Combine an eager developer community with a cheap, open development platform, and what will eventually be tons of hardware choices for the consumer... I think it'll be a huge success. I know I would buy one over an iphone or blackberry.
Well I hope you are right. I also hate the way Apple tries to control and tell you how to use their products and what developers can or cannot do.

But so far, there is nothing on the first Gphone or G1 that would make it the Iphone killer that many thought it would be.

Why are people acting like this is purely a phone?
It is just one phone of many that numerous manufacturers can place the software on.

This is once again akin to Apples first battle versus IBM clones, thanks to an operating system that is friendly to developers.

I got the Diamond this week. Still not sold on it yet. It took four days to get the data connection to work, and I still had to spend an hour at the store. The screen is unreal and it's a speedy WinMo phone, I'll give it that. I'm still playing with it, but was told that the Pro will be available next week, so I may swap out still. I like the keyboard, though text and email on the Diamond is a lot more responsive compared to the Touch.

The fact that it's an OS and not a single device does give it an edge. The fact that it's open source and free to use for developers and manufacturers alike does give it an edge. The fact that Apple is only using ATT here in the states does give Android an edge.

The iPhone is a great product, but Apple is neglecting 70% or so of the US cell market up for grabs. Android pretty much allows all the carriers and phone makers to put out a product that is just as good with the potential to be much better and more widely available.

Do some more looking into the project and who's behind it. It's not just Google. It's a huge list of big time telecom companies and hardware manufacturers. Here's the list:

The sprint touch pro will have 4Gb onboard storage AND a card reader. That is the phone I've been waiting for. Install Garmin's GPS on it and its the biggest threat to the iphone. QWERTY keyboard is extremely important. All touch typing simply doesn't work nearly as fast as a full keyboard.

You see the MSRP of this G1? its intended to be $200 which with rebates you frequently have the provider subsidize $200-300 of your phone for signing the contract! This could easily become a FREE PHONE for signing up!

You wanna know why my wife won't use the zune? doesn't have the little roller wheel thing for selecting your song! She wouldn't even use the ipod TOUCH I had simply because nothing finds music faster than that damn wheel.

Install Garmin's GPS on it and its the biggest threat to the iphone. QWERTY keyboard is extremely important. All touch typing simply doesn't work nearly as fast as a full keyboard.
