How often do you watch the news/CNN?

Whether I am in the supermarket or hanging out with the neighbors, all people can talk about is how stressed/depressed they are from the economy, etc. Yes, we have major problems going on right now, but I think the media is causing alot of people to go insane. Everyone I know watches the news non-stop and I think that's a major problem for their anxiety.

Three months ago, I decided to stop watching the news everyday and feel much better. I watch it once per week and get filled up with all the negativity I missed in sixty minutes flat.

A friend of mine said I was sticking my head in the sand. I disagree. How often are you all watching the news?

Constantly and when i'm not watching it, i'm reading it, or doing both at the same time. The only time I don't get news is when i'm out of the house or car.

    It doesn't make me anxious.

I constantly watch/read the news. I dont think not paying attention is the answer...I think you just need to be able to take it all with a grain of salt.

Essentially these publications/tv networks are all businesses and they're just out to make a buck. Sensationalism sells.

Is our economy in dire straights? Absolutely.
Is it in the medias best interest to hype it up and talk about it 24/7? Absolutely.

Very well put. When I watch it once per week, I hear everything that has been going on throughout the week..

I had this same thought during this whole financial crisis.

I'm not that old but when I was younger you basically read one newspaper in the morning and then watched the 10 p.m. news at night. And if you did that you were a well informed person. The only other time you would watch the news was if something crazy happened and they broke into normal programming on TV, like when the Space Shuttle blew up or something. Even CNN was mostly filler material back then.

Today, the gym has CNN, you get headlines on your phone, the check out lines have a tv screen with news events, etc. Every time you turn on your computer the home page has news headlines on it. Message boards you visit talk about the bad news of the day.

It magnifies everything. People think it doesn't effect them but even if you are aware of the constant overexposure, it still effects you. The brain is wired to worry more about problems at the forefront and to see them as more dire. The constant barrage of news tricks your brain into thinking you are in a very dire situation even though that may not be the case.

You are 100% right. It's everywhere. Even if you are doing ok financially, being constantly bombarded with bad news has to have an impact on your well being...

I am sticking to watching it once per week...

Believe me, if I don't watch it, someone is yapping about it anyway.

I watch news often, but I prefer to watch "opinion programs" with people that I know they don´t talk bullshit. CNN and most of the news channels are so full of empty infromation...

I load cnn.com at least 20 times per day.

I am a tad nervous about things but I know I'm safe for the moment.

I can't watch CNN because they're idiots. I wish they weren't but they are.

I've given them half a dozen chances during this Presidential campaign, and all of the so-called "analysts" they have on don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

So I stick with left leaning MSNBC (which isn't nearly as bad as the caricature...two shows have liberal hosts, the rest of the stuff is right down the middle IMO)

Fox news is obviously out of the question.

As for how often I watch.....way too much. The stuff they call "news" now is pretty ridiculous....just trying to fill up 24 hours, so it ends up being the TV version of a tabloid mag.
I should stick with print media or just the sunday shows or just regular network coverage instead of cable.....but I just can't help myself.

I have on and off periods .. right now I am on a "on" period . have it on all the time when I am behind my computer .. must say though . . its boring as fuck in the end . . channels like cnn/ bbc world / fox news / sky news . have like 30 minutes of information .. that they recycle all trough the day . . once in a while you get something new . . but in the end . .not that much going on in the world these days is my impression . . to say . . right now all that is going on is the economic meltdown ? . .but . .hmm . .if that never happened ? what would they be talking about ? other things would have been "breaking news" and relevant to our lives .. them things are stilll going down . but not being reported .. many things are not talked about anymore and have no more relevance cause all that matters right now is the election and the economic meltdown ? ? so .. me start thinking .. them other things ? do they actually matteR ? or is it just the networks trying to make some money ? dont know . . seems like it is . .

money money money . .thats what all this news is about .. nothing more . .

i do not own a Cable box, so I don't watch news on a TV, not that I watch it online either. I don't get the paper, and my startup page isn't a news source and I have no magazine subscriptions.

I easily can hold my own here with the most current events and facts.

The TV news isn't news, it's spew.. just always spewing unimportant shit and ignoring the real goods.

If I want to know that Cali is on fire, I just open GFY. If I want to see if the world ended, I see if my net is down.....

I have it on in the background as I am working all day so I can at least keep up with the news going on.

If I watched news once a month, i'd completely miss this whole crisis and probably be better off in the long run

I can't stand too much of it. The fact that you have either the 'far right', or the 'far left' views - or things that are not applicable. I try to keep a somewhat balanced view, but if I followed anything ever stated on this forum as the truth, or blindly followed blogs from other idiots, I doubt I'd be in any better of a place than I am now.

I pretty much have CNN and Fox News on in the background day and night. And yes I am stressed and anxious.

.... I am always watching CNBC and MSNBC .... but I don't let the news stress me out. I know we are all in a financial shitters but what matters most is what you do to get through it and not hearing other people complaining about it. If you have no plan to ride this fucked up recession then yeap... u should be stressed....

You should supplement that with nightly Daily Show/Colbert Report viewings. Jon Stewart complains about the same thing on a regular basis not only in monologue, but in interviews with members of the "MSM".

Barely ever. Most of the large incidents which have happened fairly recently have effectively been reported to me by friends or relatives - I just cannot be bothered to sit and be told how shit life is for 30-60 minutes by some journo who equates themselves to God, only to then have some "specialist" tell me shit that they gleaned twenty days too late from Wikipedia.

Case in point at why I don't watch the news: Last time I did, here in the UK people were queuing up to take all their savings out of the Northern Rock bank, which had hit financial difficulties; clearly a mass of people taking yet more money out of the bank wasn't going to help anyone at all.

What did the news do? It told us "not to panic" whilst sending reporters out for vox-pops with such calming questions as: "Are you here to TAKE MONEY OUT OF THE BANK NOW THAT THE WORLD IS ABOUT TO END? ARE YOU? ARE YOU? PANIC MOTHER FUCKER! PANIC LIKE I'VE JUST STABBED YOU TWICE IN THE GROIN AND TOLD YOU THAT IMMIGRANTS ARE MOVING IN NEXT DOOR TO YOUR PAEDOPHILE NEIGHBOURS!".

When news are better for few days, sales goes up, but since last week was wrong, sales are terrible
