How Amazon Adapted its Business Model to India

Marketing is understanding your market and not forcing your standard business model everywhere. Most of the new Internet users come from the developing nations. Business is done differently there.

Clever, but the same principles always apply -- give with one hand and take with the other -- this is a classic example of that old idiom in practice.

      Good plan for them.

I saw a news story a few years back where someone in the US tried to do the same thing here only for online medication. Basically, they set up a store where people could go in and use their computers to order their medicine from a Canadian (or other country) pharmacy. It would be delivered to the store and the people could come pick it up. They also allowed the customers to pay cash and the store owners would use their card to make the order.

They got very popular, but got shut down because the government said it was acting as a pharmacy.

India and China will have the largest Middle Income segments in the world.

Each year on July 1, the analytical classification of the world's economies based on estimates of gross national income (GNI) per capita for the previous year is revised. As of 1 July 2016, low-income economies are defined as those with a GNI per capita, calculated using the World Bank Atlas method, of $1,025 or less in 2015; lower middle-income economies are those with a GNI per capita between $1,026 and $4,035; upper middle-income economies are those with a GNI per capita between $4,036 and $12,475; high-income economies are those with a GNI per capita of $12,476 or more. The updated GNI per capita estimates are also used as input to the World Bank's operational guidelines that determines lending eligibility.

              These are ANNUAL earnings.
People living in First World economies make 3 to 6 times as much.

India and China will have 700 million middle income consumers in 10 or 20 years. However, they will consume 90% goods and services that are produced in in their own economic zones and produced with their own price competitive labor.

Locally produced porn too I imagine

So India has laws protecting its small busimesses from being decimated by Amazon online, unlike the U.S., so Amazon circumvents those laws as an adaptation with the same goal of dominating them online, before they develope their own internet presence by having goods delivered to the small remote shops turning them inrmto an Amazon.in post office.

Another interesting takeaway was that only 35% of India?s population has internet access

In the end the shop owners are going to screw Amazon by undercutting them when people come to pick up Amazon purchases.

The shop owners are going to better know what Amazon shoppers want and offer popular items cheaper direct in store. In response Amazon will make it against shop owners TOS to carry items from its store in shop, etc. etc. Then the prosumer, pro small business, Indian government will regulate Amazon's growth & practices to keep protecting the shop owners, when it hits a certain limit Amazon will buy out officials, relaxing laws & regulations etc. etc.

Then the shop owners will follow the TOS and not sell items in shop, hiring friends to sell in carts on the street in front of the shop, etc. etc.

Very interesting read Barry thank you!

Amazon Prime Launched in India, Amazon Video 'Is Coming' | NDTV Gadgets360.com

Amazon Prime is coming to India.
                      999 Rupees less than $15

You have to scale your prices to the local market.

A porn sub would be $4.50 -- could you make money?
And your competition is still the free tube or filelocker ... There is no price lower that free
