Learning the stock market & trading stocks etc.

I'll be honest, I don't know much about them but I am looking to learn more. Any good guides or publications I can start with? I've started talking with a financial advisor too. I've always heard the Wall St. Journal is good. Anything else?

Join updown.com - start with play money and even though they give you $1,000,000 to start with - only use as much as you'd really have to invest to try to keep some realism in your attempt.

Yeah. the WSJ is required daily reading. I also read the Financial Times which is excellent.

Read Graham's book "The intelligent Investor". Graham was Buffet's mentor. The zweig version is good if just starting.

You are buying fractional ownership of businesses so learn abour businesses. Read annual reports; as many as you can. Good to start in one industry. Read the last few annual reports for the top 5 companies in any one business. Learn a LOT this way.

          Buy an account at stockcharts.com...

Spend a few months learning chart analysis and technical indicators:
          http://stockcharts.com/school/doku.php?id=chart_school

Once you learn how to read charts, you can pretty much predict the future. It's a skill that can save/earn you thousands of dollars.

It appears to be a pretty daunting thing to fully understand. Any business you guys would recommend following that may have an easier "learning curve" so to say?

I would STRONGLY recommand you stay out of the markets right now.. as the best of the best are getting raped!

Cash is king right now.. stay on the sidelines for the next couple of months and like the fellow above mentioned.. grab some books on technical analysis... read and paper trade!

If it were easy, then everyone would be a millionaire.. personally I don't care much about long term charts, I trade by momentum. Typically I find a few stocks I like and watch and learn them. After a while you get a feel for it's day to day trading.

Once you do that, you know when to buy if it's at a low and just sell it once it goes back up. You can do this over and over again with the same stocks, it's how day traders make their living.

Just look for small safe gains and then do it repeatedly.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dumb enough to get into the markets right now just from watching all the chickens I see running around with their heads cut off. Every neighborhood I drive past has 10 realtor signs staked in the ground at the entrance. I would just like to learn how it all works and not feel like an idiot when I hit terminology that I don't know the meaning of.

If you're investing, there's only one way to invest - buy low. Buying low mean buying at a price that is below what the intrinsic value of a business is based on it's book value and present value of future cash flows. Start with industries that are interesting to you.. learn about the business on a "where the rubber meets the road" kind of level. "Toll collector" businesses (build it once, get paid every time someone uses it) are a favorite of value investors be cause they are generally simple business models and have predictible cash flows. Amex and Microsoft are examples of toll collectors.

For trading, personally, I don't even want to know the chart im looking at.. take a look at Efficient market theory to understand why. The coles notes being: all information about any given company is known by everyone who trades the stock, therefore, it's pointless to do your own research.. it's already been done and it's reflected in the price of the stock. If you trade emotionless on technical signals alone you WILL make money.

always play the market with one rule in mind:

Warren Buffett's rule for investing: don't lose money

now is the perfect time to get in if you know some good sectors...
