Its a smart move
1) not sure he would have come as far as he did in american idol if he came out before hand
2) his fan based would have been directly affected since the majority are in the group that hates gays. I even heard of a few seniors who tried to sue Clay for being gay because they said he falsely represented himself as a clean cut american boy.
3) he figured to have people focus on his music not what his penis does
4) coming out now can only help his career now that he isnt in the spotlight as much any more
