Who can explain Russian technology in the 1980s?

I just watched a show about technology in the 1980s - the Sony walkman, computers, microwaves, etc....

Was technology in Russia the same in the 1980s? When did Russians get the Walkman, arcade games, CDs, home computers, etc.....

    Just curious.

I miss the 80's... I was running a two node BBS. Learned to program, crack, and did some intros/demos with EagleSoft Inc., Fairlight, Razor1911, and Angels/Defjam.

It probably took them a couple of years, but they definitely had it.

wasn't a lot of it blocked in the 80s?

edit: blocked or they had their own versions?

Why Russia? Did the media whisper 'Russia... Russiaaa....' in your ear, like they do here in Europe? So now your subconscious is all of a sudden thinking about Russia.

                      Weird thread.

                        Yes, HIGHLY ADVANCED

Upon dismantling the Mig-25, the data was analyzed by the Foreign Technology Division of the Air Force at Dayton, Ohio. There were many surprises:

The Mig had been manufactured in February 1976 and thus was one of their latest most sophisticated production aircraft.
Transistor circuitry was not used but instead the Soviets relied on vacuum tubes for most of their electronics. The Soviets reasoned the vacuum tubes were less affected by EMP waves in the case of nuclear attack; were more resistant to temperature extremes and they were easy to replace in remote airfields where transistors may not be readily available if repairs were needed.

Ronald Reagan and his Star Wars has to strike the "Evil Empire" first and start the US Debt Mountain we have added to every day since ...

I see where you're going with this and I agree.

They get their technology mysteriously after the US invents it. So does China.

Actually that's a grammar school basics that vacuum tubes are unaffected by EMP. I'm surprised it took so long for the CIA imbeciles to figure that out

No kidding, I knew that since I was a kid.

When I was kid, I remember my mother brought me bag full of toys from Russia. They were pretty advanced at the time and very interesting although most of them were related to military (at least in that package I've got). I can clearly remember some kind of lunokhod that was going around the room on batteries.

No, not at all. In fact, you can argue a lot of the tech the general public had in the 1980s came from Japan. Namely Sony.

This isn't a "US vs Russia" thing, more about how technology advanced in different parts of the world.

What "article" are you talking about? He just gave you a link to Google images for "Soviet electronics" (record players, console games, TV's etc). I can tell you that Soviet TV's of 80's were much worse than the Japanese ones, but definitely not worse than those made in the USA - same shit, different names.

We have no GPS. Our system is called GLONASS. Course your space technology was much better - just go and compare two lists. Merica!

A lot of them working as expats here. Others like Snowden just hiding of your government. FYI: Russia is not a very friendly place for immigrants. You will die before you get even a tourist visa. For example, I need just to submit an online form and visit the US embassy to get a visa for 5 years which will be renewed automatically (I don't even have to visit your embassy every time when my 5 year old visa expires). Now go try to get a Russian visa and tell us your success story ;)

That's a place of Russian Jews that have immigrated in the early 80's, because only Jews there allowed to leave Soviet Union. So now Brighton Beach is a "Small Israel" in the NYC also know as "Judeo-Russian mafia". A normal person would newer visit that criminal hole.

I get it Russia Good America Bad.

Truthfully, I don't give a fuck so long as we are not in a shooting war.
I wonder how much money was spent in preparation of that war in the past 50 years?

Unfortunately BOTH the Russian and US Governments, and their military-industrial complexes, have profited by creating conflict -- at their peoples' expense. Mind-fuck pseudo war threats

All out wars are not survivable -- anyone with any education knows that.

Is this true, or did the average fifteen year old in 1984 have their own Walkman or something similar?

it was a status symbol... so while kids in the US were buying a car with the $$ they earned during their part time job during the summer break... kids in poorer countries were buying a pair of jeans or a walkman thinking they are ballers...

An average fifteen year old had no own Walkman in 1984. A Soviet-made cassette record player, a vinyl player or even studio-like reel tape recorder - yes, but not Walkman. Those where not produced in the USSR in 1984, so they were rare and very expensive toys from Japan. The toys you can't buy in the regular market.

And yes, I was lucky to own it in the early 80's when the one was unable to just enter the shop and buy a new Japanese toy. It was the Soviet Union - not Russia.
