    One dollar can get you a large soda at McDonald's, a used VHS movie at 7-Eleven or a house in Detroit.

    The fact that a home on the city's east side was listed for $1 recently shows how depressed the real estate market has become in one of America's poorest big cities.

    And it still took 19 days to find a buyer.

                                                                                                  actually in detroit they just take the house from you if you get behind in taxes for two years, but you cant close on it without the taxes and water bill being up to date.

It's one of those holiday's not really celebrated (or even heard of) elsewhere, but it's not uncommon in Detroit. The land that a lot of the houses sit on (excluding those with unhealthy levels of soil toxins), is worth more than the structures. The taxes are shit though.

                                                                                                                                                      Did anyone hear about the house in Pontiac a few years (5+), that was torn down by accident? It was the crackhouse next door that was supposed to be torn down, bu apparently the whole neighborhood was so bad that when there was a mixup, they couldn't tell the difference. There was a lawsuit (of course), but I never heard the outcome.
