ISAF just attacked a nuclear armed country? That now is talking about 'retaliation'?

"ISLAMABAD: American forces conducted a raid inside Pakistan on Wednesday, a senior U.S. military official said, in the first known foreign ground assault against a suspected Taliban haven. Pakistan`s government condemned the action, saying it killed at least 15 people. "

        what aren't you getting?

I don't really think any ISAF countries are paticulary worried about 'Retaliation' from a third world shit hole like Pakistan, in fact Pakistan should consider itself lucky it is not being attacked, afterall, they are allowing Taleban to hide out there..
I have a mate serving there at the moment (Helmand), wonder if he was lucky enough to be involved..

Yes, they are. As far as the Europeans are concerned, the US is shithole roughly the magnitude of Pakistan.

This sort of shit will prolly result in Bruxelles dismantling IASF.

the situation, how i see it, is we're attacking a group of people that are notorius for waiting armies out.. 40 odd million of them that breed like rabbits. Attacking Pakistan with a ground assault, after dropping missiles on them for years, will pretty much require some sort of response. This is because of power/elections that are forecoming there.

If they decide that they don't want ISAF there, or at the very least start assisting the taliban/pashtuns, things are going to get very ugly

Ahh ok, I never heard that term before, I thought he was referring to Israel or something. As for Pakistan fuck them.. They don't want to work with us then I say stop giving them money and then we do what needs to be done.

Pakistan is falling apart because they won't confront the problems within their own boarders and that's just as bad as having Iran get nukes. The bad part is we are giving them military aid while this is happening.

                        actually..

pakistan started attacking that entire region during the Georgia thing.. it was funny, because the entire war of georgia displaced 80k people.. whereas the pakistan war displaced 200k in under 3 days

Well if Pakistan would have kept up with their end of the bargain, they wouldn't be in the situation they are in now. Pakistan wanted to take the US aid dollars but then wanted to thumb their noses at us while doing it allowing the Taliban to cross back and forth their boarder at will.

Actually - if the US Military wanted to - it could roll into Pakistan and whipe out the rebels in a matter of days - and it actually does. Its the politicians and strategists back here in the states that won't let that happen because internally Pakistan is extremely unstable and could easily deteriorate to a Sharia dominated government and that's very bad for the WEST since Pakistan has nukes.

As for the raids - they are well deserved. Those 'bases' accross the border are being used to launch attacks on US & NATO forces. Just as much as Pakistan has a right to protect it's borders - so do the US & NATO forces have a right to protect themselves and that often include going on the offensive. Since the US & NATO forces have international legitimacy for being there - Pakistan has nothing to say about them defending them selves, especially since Pakistan will not - or cannot take care of their own border.

......either way - everyone is right in that it is a big problem and a big mess!

Since the US & NATO forces have international legitimacy for being there - Pakistan has nothing to say about them defending them selves, especially since Pakistan will not - or cannot take care of their own border.

......either way - everyone is right in that it is a big problem and a big mess!
i agree with you that the raids are well deserved.. it's just the aspect that the US have been dropping missiles in that region for some time. My view is that with the attack on this region, it almost recognizes that area as a separate entity from Pakistan.

What i don't understand is why so much trouble? if they know where they are, and how they come in, why not set up ambushes ourselves? i would like to know the reason behind that

Its a very large area that we are talking about and it is difficult terrain to work in and barring a massive build up of troops - there just isn't going to be enough boots on the ground to make that happen. Believe me - the US military is very adapt at dealing with this environment and can work very effectively. Any results that fall short of ideal expectations are more limited by political limitations than military capabilities.

I would guess that the raids are coordinated with the Pakistan government and then a press release is put out after the fact condemning the raid for the purposes of placating Pakistani popular opinion.

i think that is true of any of the countries fighting or supporting there.
The problem with this attack is it could bring about more people to fight.. it won't be just the people on the border and sympathizers.. now you have the rest of the 120 million or so there that are now 'under attack', and the generation raised from that.

I hope this whole thing blows over.. but from the failures of organization (translators), lack of fighting forces (us tied up, other nato countries unwilling to fight), and inability to win over the population through poppy eradication etc, we're in a very bad place.

The concerning thing, to ramble a bit, is Pakistan was the talibans one and only friend..
