Reading up on the rail gun's history, the French founder invented the idea of magnetic propulsion many years ago & yet it only seems to have been used in the recent decade. Maybe the same as laser technology, there's more to come

We aren't to the point where a single short burst of a laser light will instantly destroy a large target, but the US Military seems to be working on a laser that can take down missiles and projectiles as well as larger targets such as boats and planes. They expect to deploy this in the next five years.
Lasers will be everything in the future. Imagine having a system with unlimited ammo that can instantly engage targets at any distance and destroy them. It will completely change the the very nature of warfare.
Warfare itself has changed. In the past, there was two huge problems - finding the enemy and then destroying them. Finding them is no longer an issue; Every plane and ship is tracked. This isn't huge news; your local department store tracks you in every aisle and is able to determine when you need help. Destroying a target has become easier and easier; With lasers it will be instant. Eventually will be at a "locate and destroy" instantly.Herschel Savage

The energy is not unlimited (show me at list an iPhone which can work for a month w/o re-charging). The laser can not work just instantly. The laser ray need time to heat гз the target. The targets can use anti-laser coating. Laser is absolutely useless in a rainy or snowy weather. Laser can not work at any range. It's effective on a close distance only because... note my posts about Rayleigh scattering. Actually, the real distance is closer than a distance of machine-gun bullet. So course lasers can be used in military, but they are very limited because of our atmosphere and various weather conditions. It will work in some limited cases and on a very limited range.
As I mentioned above, the steam engines are also work, but people are smart enough to avoid their usage on cars and motorbikes. There are more effectively technologies for that.
E.g. this toy is more effective on close ranges than any theoretically invented laser system:
It has missiles that fly in any weather and don't afraid of rains, snows and smoke. Plus to that uses 60 round per second cannons which will cut off any target to pieces like saws in just a moment.
When yo need the long range systems, you will go with those:

To be short, you can not invent a laser which will be able to hit anything over the horizon (hope don't need to explain why).

They don't need so much power as lasers, they can work at almost any distance (including the theoretically unreachable ones for lasers). They work in any weather condition, they a rather cheap, very reliable etc. So that's all about the efficiency. Lasers have lost this battle long before its beginning... Lasers are so 70s

The power of a laser is in fact unlimited. A nuclear powered aircraft carrier, for example, could shot down one hundred planes a minute with lasers for sixty years and still power the entire ship.
I am not sure if this carries over into Russian, but in the English speaking world any military force is limited by the "three b's" - Beans, bullets and bandaids. Ammo is the key, but it's complicated, difficult, and time consuming. You have to keep a supply line open to the front; If you cannot supply the forces on the front line you loose. Now imagine that entire convoys are replaced with a single box that can power a laser canon with tens of thousands of rounds.
A fighter jet is limited by how much ammo it can carry, which is really very little. Now imagine a plane having a box the size of a single missile that can fire thousands of shots. The plane will run out of fuel long before it could ever run out of ammo.Herschel Savage

It could be funny if some former soldier would teach me (an officer) about the military. But I don't want to argue with you about that, private. I just know physics, which you don't because your education level is... a bit different, and I know that efficiency of lasers is very limited in the Earth's atmosphere. The US military companies can suck out billions for their toys from the stupid taxpayers (yes, I know how business works and the military business is not different), but they won't jump over the physical laws. If you guys will spend some more time for learning the basics of rocket technologies, perhaps sometimes you will be able to make something really working and effective like S-400 or even (sweet dreams, sweet dreams) S-500 instead of those pew-pew laser toys, and maybe (I say maybe) you will be able to fly into the outer space with your own rockets, and it will be in the real life but not just in Hollywood movies. I do believe someday you will be able do something like that. But for now, please learn physics. It's the only thing that will help you to make something more technological than Facebook. that's great, except US reconnaissance and stealth aircraft have run 1000s of missions since the 60s... SR-71s have been flying over Russian airspace for decades, and with all those advanced AA systems, you can count the number of aircraft lost on one hand... what gives?

I actually touched parts of the f117 I got to play around with the top part, its very well built it has aluminium honey comb structure inside...we gave all the shit to the russians and chinnese so do not worry about your stealth tech falling in to the wrong hands
