I am not a Navy guy, so I do not know much about anti missile defense when it comes to ships... but I believe most US Navy ships have "automated gatling guns" that can throw a serious amount of lead to fuck up any incoming missiles.
On the other hand, I believe in the 1970s and 1980s the plans were to take out aircraft carrier groups with small tactical nukes... You don't need to hit a ship, just get close to it and make it worthless for the next one thousand years...
