I don't think so. You can have larger images "600 on the long side" that are linked from the smaller images in your gallery.

since when has doing galleries become something bad???
i want to submit a gallery. the gallery has thumbs in let's say 100x100px - i click on a thumb and get a picture that is 640x480 px. OK? or is the picture too small as full size pic since nowadays i see mostly 800x600 or 1024x768

The way it reads is that you wanted to do the THUMBS at 640X480.
As for what you are actually asking, If the content in the site is larger than 640x480 then you need to make sure that the gallery states that VERY clearly, Remember that most surfers DONT read the text on the gallery. Some places have a minimum of 700 px on the long side, but not tons of them.
If you are trying to go through a brownie script, keep the weight above 40k.~

As Selena says, most sites will be ok, some pick up on less than 500 and block you but not too many. Take heed of her warning on a 40k minimum though (or 35k at a push).Comment

640x480 is borderline, 800x600 is best imho to pass all the submission scripts. Anything larger should be for paying customers.
More emphasis should be on the main page with the thumbnails. 100x100 is way too small.Comment
