For free, you can test out phpbb,bbpress, MyBB and Simple Machines.
For paid options the best IMO are XenForo and Invision Power Board. flarum looks good as well.

I've used phpBB for years and like it.

Would be interested in trying a wordpress based forum but haven't found anything yet.

Then try bbpress (very easy in use but lacks basic forums features, but you can install some plugins which can do the job).
