I think an hotel and a hotel are both technically correct but I could be wrong. Why "an hotel"? I guess for the same reason one would use "an historic event" - depends on how you say hotel I guess?

Example: Most Americans says erb while Brits say herb. An erb vs A herb and An 'otel vs A hotel ....
