SPOILER:
Why wouldn't the old man tell the story to Mulder and say "you are close"? I mean his reasoning was that people would mock them, but that same mocking would happen if/when Mulder find it out by himself (for which the old man roots).
So it does not make any sense for the old man not to tell him and save time.
I mean I understand that this was done for the sake of showing how Mulder finds out the truth, but it did not make any logical sense in general. In my books that is huge illogical error in screenplay.
