Christmas is a religious holiday. So it's being celebrated on January 7th by Julian calendar. New Year is a secular holiday, so it's being celebrated on January 1st. The country lives by Gregorian calendar and only Orthodox Christian church uses the Julian one. That's why it's called Orthodox
