    Video editors - what setup do you have?

    I'm thinking about moving to an iMac or Pro as no matter what I do with a PC it always has huge problems with video editing.

    Interested in hearing what solutions everyone has come up with

      I have a custom built PC running the Adobe Suite, so I use Premiere Pro for the actual editing. I have cut SD, HD, and 4K, with zero problems, though the 4K can make the computer run a little slow... I'm gonna add some more memory to remedy that. I have 4 onboard fast disk drives and USB drives for backup--nothing really special--though I have two SSD drives for my programs and work file areas.

          I would prefer to stick with PC as I know it.

          Also running the Adobe Suite and have so much trouble right now with editing 4k and also 1080p when I have numerous effects on the time line.

                  You need a badass graphics card to use the power of GPU computing to solve that.

                  I'm currently using the NVidia K4200 card.

                  BUT...I'm now working with h265 4K files. And that doesn't work on the Keplar "K" series card.

                  I'm going to have to invest in a new "M" card ("Maxwell" processing)

                  The NVidia M6000 is the monster card. But very, very expensive. I'm looking at the M4000 which is cheaper and has an HEVC dedicated encoder.

                  That's what your lacking...GPU computing power.
                  Of course you still need a bad ass CPU with tons of memory as well for all the rendering tasks that can't be done with GPU to make the whole thing nice and smooth.

                  I have the I 7 XTreme CPU processor with 24 GB of RAM

                  But even with all of that...I can barely cut through H265 files with effects and plugins. I need to get that "M" card as soon as possible.

                      I take it you do all of your work on a windows machine? Do you run a dedicated editing machine ?

                          Yep, I work on a Windows machine using Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015

                          And I use this machine for everything. But when I'm editing and rendering vid I don't do anything else at the same time.

                              Is there any reason that you do not transition to Mac for say video editing only?

                              I just did a little reading about the M4000 - looks like it could be part of the solution. Be great if the entire system could be bought off the shelf.

                                      I'm just more comfortable with Windows. And this rig handles anything I put at it. I've had it now since 2011...probably time for an upgrade soon.

                                      But in my opinion, the future is h265. And that's something that is going to need the new generation of graphics cards like the M6000 so that GPU can be in the mix like it is now with h264 files.

                                          I bought a top of the line Mac in 2003--after listening to too much pro-Mac propaganda--and after three months sold it to a friend for a $750 loss. I've been using IBM compatible machines since 1983, and I can still get into the OS to do things quicker than is possible in Windows, so for me, the learning curve with the Mac was just not worth the effort. I ended up getting a custom high end PC built, and never looked back.

                                          One thing I forgot in my earlier post: I have a high-end graphics card that works with Premiere Pro to speed up rendering, etc.

                                              Numerous effects? Any processor intensive effects can be added to a clip, tweaked, then turned off until you're ready to export the video. Also, I've found alternatives for some effects that use a lot of processing power (e.g., sharpening).

                                                  That is where I am at, more comfortable with Windows, however definitely need to make a change as with new camera gear it is impossible to work on anything at all now.

                                                  Do you build yourself or get pc's built? I don't mind building it, just get the shits with compatibility issues etc and tweaking everything

                                                      Stick with PC. You get most performance for your money. You can overclock, put water cooling or high CFM cooler, overclock, upgrade for fraction of money anytime you want ... you can put numerous HDD's inside, have RAID for performance or backup inside the case and not having additional external HDD's on table.

                                                      And when some SW you use don't have some functionality, you have plenty of others to choose from.
                                                      And PC SW is much more tested as most people worldwide working on computers have PC and Apple is just fashion accessory for insecure kids.
                                                      Imagine MS Word on your Mac, you buy new printer and all of sudden you have no print preview.

                                                      Also, building own PC is quite satisfying.
                                                      Get ASUS/Gigabyte mobo, Kingston rams, Intel i7, Intel SSD, Seagate HDD, SB as sound card, nVidia GPU on ASUS/Gigabyte board and the Windows 7 will run perfectly.

                                                      I don't shutdown computer, I put it in sleep and my Windows 7 easily runs for 3 months in row without having to restart.

                                                              how do the top consumer cards handle editing 4k? example: gtx980

                                                              i feel like they'd compare with the k series half decent.

                                                              i read it has 0 issues with playback but with filters, starts to choke up a bit

                                                                  Thanks for the input on specs, i'm looking at Nvidia Quadro M5000 and a few other bits you've listed. A mate is going to research and build for me as I don't have the time.

                                                                              Thanks for your initial reply to this thread, it got me thinking that sticking with pc and building something to suit my exact use would be a better option than having to relearn everything with a new O/S.

                                                                                      If you want to get REALLY serious they offer Xeon processors.
                                                                                      I configured one with a XEON 12 core processor...but they have even more powerful ones than that.
                                                                                      I also configured it with a Quadro M5000 card.

                                                                                      By the time I got done playing around with the configuration, the cost is over $7000

                                                                                      I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. Just looking at the moment.

                                                                                                  I'm currently looking at i7 6 core, dual Quadro M4000 cards 64gb ram, samsung 512gb ssd for o/s, x99 board - not sure about cooling or if it is even needed right now.

I built mine in 2013 and I'm doing 4K work as well as After Effects on it with no problems. Go for stability and don't overclock the CPU.

                                                                                                                          I imagine grading on resolve panel is as good as it gets.

                                                                                                                              I ended up going with the Samsung NX1 and sold off my Canon 5D's. I love this thing and it was inexpensive too.

                                                                                                                                  Robbie, the footage from the new 4.6K sensor is trickling out and for the cost, it rivals the images coming out of the the cinema cameras the big shots are using. I don't know that it will ever catch on with that section of the film business or television...but for local commercials and indie features, I'm not at all disappointed with the purchase.

                                                                                                                                  But she is a big bitch, that is for dame sure.

                                                                                                                                      I just invested in the NX1 as well. Do you have a picture of your camera rig? Trying to decide on how to rig mine up, so looking for how other industry folks have their DSLR rigs set up.

And I have a ring light, was using an overhead mic with a wireless set up for audio and using strobes for the pics as well as the ambient light of Kinos.

                                                                                                                                          But the last few scenes I shot...I just used the Kinos. No ring light, no overhead mic, no rig, not even strobes for the pics.
                                                                                                                                          This damn thing doesn't NEED any of that. I've just been hand holding the camera.

                                                                                                                                          I've got tons of gear now that I don't even bother taking with me. Instead of lugging in a big trunk full of gear, I'm actually walking in rolling the Kino lights with my camera in it's case around my shoulder.

                                                                                                                                          I've even went to shooting full auto (something I NEVER did with my old Canon 5D MkIII).

                                                                                                                                          I shot this scene a few days ago without even using my lights! It was in the afternoon and I just used the ambient sunlight coming in the windows!

                                                                                                                                                  I have a few Hackinsoth boxes from a few years back. But just built a new one. i7, 64gb ram, dual gtx 960s. Runs OSX and Windows. It cuts and renders 4K with ease.

                                                                                                                                                  I actually sold the one I posted above and built this one for less.

                                                                                                                                                  I have mostly used FCPX for the last few years. I do a little VFX so I use After Effects and the rest of the Adobe Suite. I am also REALLY into color grading at the moment and use Resolve 12, which is a fully capable NLE as well as industry standard color grading software.

That was a great video by the way. I do love how well it shoots with ambient lighting, as I've test shot a few clips specifically that way and they've all come out good. I've got my NX1 paired up with the 16-50mm lens, thinking of also getting the 18-200 (Movie Pro lens). So far I really like the quality of the 16-50, but find myself having to change focus from time to time. I'm assuming you use one of those two for your videos? I've heard some folks say that the Movie Pro is best for video, whereas the 16-50 is king for stills (on an NX1, that is.)

I did most of my catalog between 2002 and 2011 with FCP7. Then the dark 2 years of FCPX that didn't work. Went with PP for a year @ $50/month. My brain still hurts.

                                                                                                                                                          I've done a couple on iMovie. Still way too complicated, but works for AVCHD files from my Panasonic video camera, and SONY still/movie mode camera..

                                                                                                                                                          I like Toast. Now up to 14. I've had luck with Roxio/Toast MyDVD that comes with Toast 14 Pro, re-constructing a couple of lost DVDs. Still don't have DVD Studio Pro (circa 2010) on my new MacMini, but I will get to that.

                                                                                                                                                          There's no use trying to resurrect FCP7, because it's too much time converting AVCHD to something FCP7 could use. No use crying any longer over that.

                                                                                                                                                                  Don't know much about the Movie Pro lens except that it's about half the price of the 16-50.

                                                                                                                                                                  It's kinda weird to me with this camera. With my old Canon setup I was adding new stuff all the time (and spending a small fortune on it). With this NX1 I am capable of shooting great vid and pics without any of the accessories that were "must have" with my old rig.

                                                                                                                                                                  The first few things I shot with the NX1 weren't all that great.
                                                                                                                                                                  I was trying to shoot "flat" like I would with the Canon and then do massive color grading in post.

                                                                                                                                                                  But I quickly figured out that's not the way to use the NX1.

                                                                                                                                                                  So I stopped shooting in manual for the first time ever...and now I shoot full auto.

                                                                                                                                                                  This thing isn't like a "camera". It's more like a small computer with a lens attached to it.
