Most of them are forced to work on Christmas or other holidays because their schedule happens to have them working that day. Being off is probably worth more than time and a half to them I bet.

And you should look at your property taxes. I think it's pretty straight forward what you pay for police services in your area.

NRP special duty rate is $70/hr - and on stat holidays they get double time and a half of that.

I know exactly what my property taxes are - and what our police services cost. This year's budget is $133.6 million (over 90% of which is wages and benefits).

Of the 703 police officers employed by Niagara Regional Police, last year there were 602 NRP officers on the annual 'Sunshine List' (police officers making $100,000 or more - not including benefits), with the top earner, Police Chief McGuire, making $297,082.03, plus $32,445.09 in taxable benefits.

As of Feb/2014 - the median cost in Niagara Region per household for policing in Niagara Region is $655 (and that was two years ago).

But this is not the main point of the OP.
