The Mujahadeen didn't come around until well after there were several rebellions and a Muslim leader overthrew the king (this is how the OP's photo illustrates that change). The leadership of the Mujahadeen, which is now the Taliban, originally came out of Pakistan. The U.S. covertly funneled money through Pakistan to support the Mujahadeen not because they were allies, but because the U.S. was in a Cold War with Russia.
As I said in my previous post, Afghanistan was completely fucked well before the U.S., or Russia had any involvement. The U.S. could somewhat be blamed for the Taliban being in power, since they evolved from the Mujahadeen in which the U.S. supported. But to blame it solely on the U.S. is historically inaccurate.
