New site to be built... Help

I have a VOD ( + tangible DVD sales) site, well built but cumbersome to administer.

I see posts here about these various "ready made" CMS sites. So here is my dilema.

1) I want my own hosting company to host the site.
2) I do NOT have a membership site, I have individual streams.downloads or DVDs sales.
3) Once I pay for it I want to own it..

I am confused about the Wordpress, Web.com and all the others posting here...

So, do I build a new site by hiring a programmer and run into the problems I have now, or do I go with somebody pushing their stuff here and then when they go out of business so is my site??

Note: as I have said in many of my posts I am a business person and not a geek, so I know my site is JAVA, not PHP but to me its the same....I have no clue what the difference is.

hire legit developers like konrad/woj and get site built and hosted on your servers .

dont fuking use wordpress,
dont use readymade cms, scripts
get custom made as per your requirements. custom made by experienced developers gives piece of mind, stability , security

Don't use TURDpress for a serious business website. Hire a trustworthy developer that will code your site, and maintenance it if your business lasts years.

If you want to do everything yourself (hiring someone to write code, host it on your own servers etc) then this is good and bad. It's good because you keep total control, and can change it around at any time. It's bad because it will cost you a lot of money and time, and your risk is significant.

An alternative is to look for existing solutions. Your problem and business are not unique, so there are solutions that exist out there already, and each will cost you far less than doing it on your own and at far less risk.

It's hard to give you recommendations since you didn't share too much detail. My suggestion based on what you offered would be to list the top 5 problems you have with your current setup, then use Google to find solutions. There are definitely programs, scripts and solutions for just about everything out there these days.

Another route you can take is to hire a consultant to evaluate your current setup and suggest existing solutions, and or recommend a good programmer to you.

In fact, there are plenty of consultants here on GFY that might be able to help you.

Yes and no.... My site is well designed and built in excellent and very robust JAVA. The prgrammer is a genius, the problem is I can never find him when I need him. He has so many big gigs ( like beeing a head of a cyber security for a major bank).... my site is a hobby for him at best and no, he would NEVER let me to have somebody else to look after his "baby". He would rather turn my lights out. He has me by the short hair. So no, I really do not want to get into the same situation again. I want somebody experienced, and yes I want stability and a piece of mind..... But I do not want to be potentially blackmailed like when I told my my current guy I want to hire somebody to help him..

So I want something/ somebody who can build it, probably look after it but I do not ever want to be reliant on one person and his moods.

One clarification I should however make. By hosting on my servers I have meant server companies I hire and pay for. What I did not want to have some developer company to bulid and to host my site ( as some of the ready mades insist), that is because if they go out of business or stop caring then my business is down the toilet.

first hire a trustworthy remote java guy and start taking control of your domains, domain acounts at registrar , server , data , mails , other servers , backups, step by step .
when you get full control of your site, kick out that genius psycho programmer and hire one inhouse java guy and ask remote java guy to be inhouse.

so you wont be in same situation again. imho.

dont give full control to one person. as its said in batman movie . too much power for single person

Why are you working with him? You don't need someone like that, who gives a fuck how good of a programmer he is if he isn't around?

Honestly I would troll the fuck out of him and look for another coder or shift things to just yourself and completely lock him out and change all passwords..
If you piss off programmers, especially some douche that's blackmailing you, there's a good chance that your site will be down or messed up by the time you get rid of him..

Damn I was and am ( blackmailed) as late as yesterday....Howere its esier said then done... How do I determine who is hones or not ( can you spell MJ of GFY fame ) I have one domain and one site, I could change a password and lock him out ( I control the server) but I am sure he has some " cookie thing a magic" he can get there and fuck it up. So, that is what I want a new site ( and fuck JAVA it is too complicated)... Once I have a new site, then I just switch to it and and I will take a bet he will not notice its gone for at least 30 days when his monthly " maintenance" invoice was not paid

Yes, but most tell me here to stay away from "ready made" CMS systems like Wordpress.
As possibly vulnerable to hackers. Not sure if I had WP site if Verotel risk people would be happy ???

I have hired him since he was highly recommended by reliable colleagues.... He built the site but it has "zero" SEO for example and as I said he is generally AWOL. As somebody suggested above I am trying to find a solution, but am strating to loose faith in coders and cannot tell which is reliable and which is not...

But I am trying that is why I am here.

konrad and woj are good guys, they wont do something like this. konrad has company so its not like he works alone idk how many ppl work with woj but both are trustworthy and you can count on them.

if you think new coder will again put you in same situation then why not hire a reputable development company rather than a person as a coder ?

and get your new site done in php .

We have webmasters using all kinds of CMS's, including WordPress and PornCMS - I have quite a few guys happy with PornCMS.

Security wise I think the risk is attacks or individuals who are able to get inside your server and steal content and harvest what you collect from your end-users. What happens on the Verotel order page is separate and we use encryption for that, so there is no risk of credit card data being stolen, etc.

I had one "JAVA company" check the site ( recommended by my hosting company in NJ). They looked, poked about and said " no go, this is so complex of a code we would not even know where to start" , now there are other JAVA guys here but most wish to stay anonymous and I am not about to give them a "PIN numbers for my credit cards" ....

... So the dilemma continues....but see my reply to Jason below.
