Affable, charismatic, and all around non-threatening (old ladies will like him just as much as kids). Last long? He's been doing big numbers for more than a decade. I think he's only one of three actors that's had 7 consecutive movies gross over $100 million (Tom Cruise and somebody else on that list). His latest movie makes it his 8th, so he's now in a class of his own.
Ironically I'm not much of a fan of his films (aside from Six Degrees of Separation), while I was a huge fan of his tv show and even his adolescent rap songs in the 80's. The movies just seem like throw away non-memorable action flicks.Comment

He is one of the few guys that makes movies everyone wants to see. Normally you can look at any big movie weekend and see opposite programing. This means if a big action movie or Sci-Fi movie is opening they will usually open a romantic comedy, regular comedy or chick flick opposite it so those that don't want to see the new action/sci-fi flick have something else to choose from. When Will Smith opens a movie very little or nothing else opens on that same weekend because he is one of the few guys who is making movies that guys and girls want to see and he reaches across demographics and pulls in viewers of all ages, races and backgrounds.
Will it last? So far he is doing pretty good and I would expect him to be big for a while more. Eventually they all cool off a little and the next big thing comes along, but I think he is here to stay for a while.Comment

I think part of his appeal is also he seems to be a regular guy and down to earth. Everything I have ever read about how he is with his fans and also how he is on movie sets and with the press is this guy really doesnt think he something special just because he is a celebrity.
