The Tobacco industry obviously doesnt want herbs to be legal.

The Alcohol companies Budweiser and other Gigantic Corporations for obvious reasons want to keep it illegal.

Unless it gets some major financial backing from some huge lobbyists that are going to drop the kind of $$$ that the tobacco and alcohol lobbyists do, then it will never be legal. It is a mind altering drug, legalized for the right price.

Walking by and sniffing it on the air does not affect you the way taking a proper hit does. Its like getting a whiff of a cigarette or pipe. You smell the smell but you aren't taking a fucking huge lungful.

Then there is the thing about 'everyone' smoking in public. Take Amsterdam, most people smoke either in the cafes or at home. The percentage of people wandering around idly smoking a joint is small. Just 'cause they can doesn't mean they would.

That's YOU bro. You really think everyone does that? It sucks ass for those who actually do drink/smoke responsibly, like yourself. At school I always hated going by this little enclosed courtyard area that you had to pass to get to your classes, everyone would smoke down there and smell like absolute shit. You came out of the courtyard smelling like cigarettes, yummy.

Couple weeks ago I was in St. Louis checking out the Arch. Was pretty cool, the video about it was interesting. Anyway, as I was leaving there were these two chicks sitting in front of the monument on a little bench smoking away. Funny shit. My little brother wanted to know what the smell was, haha, I'm sure next year he'll be tokin' it up himself.

But I agree, I would probably put weed and alcohol on the same platter. And I'd much rather weed than cigarettes, but in public I don't want either. Nor should I be subject to either.

Nocostporn - Most people wouldn't know if you were feeling 'festive' or not. You'd have to be pretty fucking stoned for people walking by to notice. Also, if you WERE that stoned, I doubt you'd be thinking about going into work. That one makes me giggle!!

JAS - I prefer people to smoke cigs outside than inside (aside from their own houses of course). And similarly to weed, walking past someone lighting up isn't gonna give you cancer. Its just a smell. An unpleasant one to many people, but still just a smell. Besides, people who smoke are harassed enough about where they can and cannot do so. I'm not a cig smoker and don't like the smell/affects of cigarettes but you gotta give the addicts a break.

There is a reason an establishment like Blunt Brothers doesn't serve alcohol (although I've been hearing that the alcohol license for New Amsterdam Cafe is "about to happen"). Alcohol is a violence enducing drug. Marijuana is not. You can bet your last bingo ticket that the introduction of booze to this environment would FUCK it right up. Isn't that proof enough?

Booze and violence are as American as apple pie. IMHO, Marijuana use promotes peace. Peace is NOT condusive to American values (i.e. the good ol' fashioned American Way) as it would require America to drop its 200 plus years of aggressive Imperialism. I think the main reason it is still illegal is it has been illegal for many decades and the congress, republicans and democrats alike, are afraid of offending soccer moms and the elderly.
To advocate the legalization of marijuana would be very risky politically.
